General Election in 2022? 18/1 - good value (n/t) on 09:46 - Aug 2 with 1595 views | J2BLUE | No chance. With the polls showing Labour ahead and all Tories repeating the "Liz ran for leader on the same manifesto" line they will bat the question away easily. The media won't push them either.

Of course they will also choose to ignore the fact that Truss and Sunak are running presidential-style leadership campaigns with no mention of the 2019 Tory manifesto...
General Election in 2022? 18/1 - good value (n/t) on 10:09 - Aug 2 with 1530 views | GlasgowBlue | No way will Truss or Sunak have reduced Labour's lead in the polls within a couple of months of taking over. Especially with Energy bills going sky high in October. Either one of them will look at the lay of the land in spring 2023. I still think that will be highly unlikely. They have an 80 seat majority so there is simply no need to go to the country. I think this parliament will last the full five years.

Indeed. Why go to the country when you know there is no chance of increasing your majority and every chance you will lose power. We are sadly stuck with this shower for 2 more years

Under Johnson I'd have put money on Winter 2023 but Truss and Sunak both seem to be implying they'll let the parliament run until 2024. Plus with the financial situation as dire as it is, there's no incentive to do it.

General Election in 2022? 18/1 - good value (n/t) on 13:27 - Aug 2 with 1040 views | ArnoldMoorhen | It is highly, highly unlikely, for the reasons others have stated. The Tories have everything to lose and precious little to gain from a General Election now. Unless they were being really devious and plan on throwing it so that Labour take power just as recession kicks in. Then the Tories would have been "punished" for Johnson, and moved on, and Labour would get the blame for a terrible economy, making them unelectable for another 15 years afterwards. But it would require about 100 self-serving Tory MPs to vote for Parliament to be dissolved with a huge possibility that they would lose the power and status that being an MP gives them. So I would still say "No".

I'm not sure it's right that it would require any MPs to vote for Parliament to be dissolved. Following the repeal of the FTPA, is it not the case that the PM, exercising the royal prerogative power, can bring an end to the current parliament and cause a general election? But in any event, yes, unlikely that either the Tories in general or the new PM in particular would want to run the risk of being booted out of power immediately, versus another two guaranteed years in office.

THERE IS A REASON SOME OF US CHOOSE TO AVOID THE FOOTBALL SECTION. And you've perfectly illustrated why.

It’s also rare, but Starmer needs to do precisely nothing. It wasn’t the case with Milliband and Corbyn, who didn’t do enough, but the current PM elects are nothing short of useless! Say what you like about Boris, but his Brexit promise won over the country. This current crop offer nothing.

The thread title, ‘General election in 2022…’ should have given you a bit of a clue it’s not football. Mistakes happen. I can see why you’d be agitated if you are autistic, but if you’re not you could try ignoring it when people make mistakes? It used to annoy me that people spam new threads on the same topic rather than adding to an existing one, but I let it go and feel much better for it. It’s like the freedom you feel going commando.
