Here's another fact:

Kieran McKenna is the only permanent Ipswich manager to have a winning away record (more wins than losses). Not Sir Bobby or Sir Alf, or George Burley or John Lyall, or Joe Royle or Mick McCarthy.

Pretty staggering stuff.

I am moderately confident a few of the others would have made a decent fist of managing a highly funded squad in the 3rd division.

They were all here much longer in higher leagues. Not really comparable.

Well, yes, Sir Alf was promoted from the 3rd Division South without that advantage. But even in 1956-7 his Town team Won 7, Drew 6 and Lost 10 Away, and were promoted as Champions due to exceptional Home form.

The point stands that even very good managers with winning records over-all don't often win more than lose away.

As others have said, relative to Alf, Bob and George he’s been here about 5 mins so comparisons are essentially worthless at this stage. Not to mention we’re operating in Division 3.

I had an interesting chat with one of the employees at the National Football Museum in Manchester in May. He was a Utd fan and we both agreed that Utd's incredible away record, and defensive record, fell apart as soon as he left. The back end of last season was ridicululous in defensive stats for Ipswich, yet Utd started shipping goals almost immediately after he left.

I'm not sure he was appreciated at Utd for what he brought to the team defensively, but I'm pretty sure we are now reaping the benefit of such a progressive appointment.

Could be a coincidence of course, but interesting nevertheless.

If memory serves those managers played at a higher level with a major financial millstone which required astute management for considerably longer periods.

One or two of them won promotion too.

What has where they played got to do with it? That logic says as top players Lampard and Gerrard must be top managers. They are not.

I think the OP is interesting even if you cannot make a true comparison. You can certainly can compare McKenna’s efforts with Cooke’s both on and off the field.

I had no idea of that. If correct, and I’m not really doubting, it is very telling and another indicator that KM is the real deal. We’ve certainly had the start to the season that we all dreamed of. Long may 8n continue - starting with another win today (at the sort of place we have previously really struggled at)
