VAR isn't the problem. It's the cretins running it in this country. It worked fine in the 2018 World Cup and the Euros in 2021.

Caught prem highlights in a bar earlier… looked like VAR was on steroids today, every game seemed to hand something controversial under review. The disallowed Everton goal was a shocker too

100% this VAR as a tool is amazing, for some reason, our FA seems to want to try to swim uphill in treacle using it, rather than just adopt the FIFA/UEFA version (that seems to work so well in comparison)

The Newcastle one isn't that bad. If you want to argue there is a push on Willock(?) and that's what takes him into the keeper, then fine, but ordinarily you wouldn't see a free kick for that especially in a crowded penalty area. If we're accepting that as the usual hustle and bustle of a corner or free kick, then it's a foul on the keeper. The guy is running in at speed, completely misses his header and clatters into the keeper. If it had stood I wouldn't have had a problem, because I can see the argument that Willock himself was nudged, but equally I can easily see why they disallowed it. It's never going to be an exact science, and that's VAR's issue - it gives the impression everything will be right, which will never ever be possible.

But on the other hand, it's happened to West Ham, so actually...quite funny. [Post edited 4 Sep 2022 3:44]

The standard of officiating is so dire across the board in this country. It should be really worrying to your average fan that some of these decisions are being made even with the benefit of watching the incidents back multiple times from different angles.

If we consider the reason why the officiating standards are so poor, we might conclude it's because no one wants to become a ref in the first place due to the relentless abuse and scrutiny. Who fancies putting themselves out there each week to have tens of thousands of angry fans screaming at their every decision? I know I don't.

If anything when it came in I thought that at least it would pick up on those diving and punish them. It seems to do the opposite with multiple checks for penalties determined on whether someone is touched or not. This incident is pretty bizarre when both players are looking to con the ref but the VAR ref can’t seem to see that, so I’d agree with others, play on, goal.
Just seen that 2nd West Ham goal VAR'd off on MoTD on 08:26 - Sep 4 with 1447 views | NthQldITFC | Just watched it. It's clear simulation by the keeper, BUT the striker did deliberately leave his foot in, although all he did is stroke the keeper's arm with it. Should have been a common sense decision to allow the goal to stand, but you can see why the ref gave the decision he did in a way. Trying to apply precision technology to a subjective field (i.e. everything apart from balls crossing lines, or offsides perhaps) was logically always going to fail. Stupid people who don't understand this are in charge of the business of football though. It reminds me of a scene in Breaking Bad that always really pisses me off. In a flashback Walt and Gretchen are listing the chemical composition of a human body: "Hydrogen 63%, Oxygen 26%, Carbon 9%..." then we get to 2 decimal places for "Nitrogen 1.25%", and 5dp for "Iron 0.00004%" etc. Then super brain Walt 'adds it all up' and says "that's 99.888042%, we're short by 0.111958%", as if that level of precision can be applied when the first few components were only quoted to 0dp - or are we supposed to believe that Hydrogen is exactly 63.000000%? It's just stupid dressed up as clever for the stupid. VAR kind of tries to apply a precision to something that it doesn't make sense to do so with, just because half-witted officials, media people and technology businesses think it looks cool or something. Strange rant, sorry!

Get your whistle and cards and do a course, the country is desperate for refs.
