Politically savvy types of TWTD, a question for you. 13:11 - Sep 26 with 1354 viewsNthQldITFC

What is the likelihood of a General Strike or some other electorate-initiated action resulting in a GE in the short term?

I would think that the mere prospect of a GE would serve to stabilise the situation, hopefully before these cretins double down and make it even worse.

A General Strike will make things much worse for many people in the short term.

I'd be more in favour of direct action letting Tory MPs know how we are suffering, wherever they go, every day. They absolutely cacked themselves when people started posting their photo on Twitter when they voted for sewage in the rivers.

If your MP voted for that, print a few hundred A5 sheets with their photo and a sentence saying so, and maybe a photo of a nearby beach or river (or a famous/popular one if not completely local) with sewage in it, and post them through letter boxes near you. 300 flyers could take as little as 3 hours to deliver, in my experience, if you are able bodied and get into a rhythm. And encourage others to do the same. It won't take long for that to get back to them.

From the Guardian live feed (referencing the Telegraph)

'Vote of no-confidence in Truss? Seems likely eventually, though Tory backbenchers probably have to be squeezed harder (the Telegraph suggested cable [the £/$ rate] below parity could be the trigger).'

and:

'Analysts at bank Nomura have slashed their forecasts for the value of the pound.
They now expect sterling to hit parity with the US dollar by the end of November, and fall further by the end of the year to $0.975.'

So maybe The Tories will do themselves in within a couple of months?

Can you imagine if they did away with Truss?

Their system would put Patel or someone else even worse than them up against someone not as bad and the party members will choose the worst option every time.

I think Starmer is playing his cards pretty well by leaving the stage to the Tories as they tear themselves apart. (Reports tonight of friction between Truss and her Chancer).

If Labour were to support a General Strike that would present an immediate rallying point for the Tories to close ranks against commie union leaders etc. They would invoke memories of their great leader Thatcher.

Labour presenting themselves as the party of compassion and reason is likely to be a much more effective strategy.

Ballots for teacher strikes go out soon. I'd be amazed if people don't vote to strike after the RMT et al have led the way.

Whether that leads to joined up tactical strikes who knows? If schools go one day, then trains another, post another etc in deepest winter, after a sh1tty Xmas etc that might be enough.

Enough is Enough are rallying this weekend at various cities, it'll be a good litmus test if they get the numbers I'd think.

If the 1922 committee don't amend their rule which says "no vote of no confidence within leader's first 12 months", I think Labour would call for one & there'd then be a GE.

My con MP Julian Smith supported Johnson to the end, but has already spoken out against Truss & her Chancer's (nice one, stolen it, apols!) kamikaze economics. When tories think that the nation's perception is that the tory party can't be trusted with the nation's economy ...

I understand the difficulty, the hardship and the fear, all the negatives but I feel with this lot we’ve reached a tipping point. If that means a general strike, marches etc, I will support them.

These creatures need to understand that they govern with the consent of the people. I don’t remember anyone consenting to Beaker and Bunsen Honeydew at the helm doing what they’ve done.

If they feel in the right, call a GE and let the people decide. Even Heath had the guts to do that, even if he was then told to go and take a hike.

Am I right in thinking that either a government-initiated vote of confidence failing or an opposition-initiated vote of no confidence passing means an automatic and unescapable General Election? Or can the 1922 smirkers just call a leadership election in either or both of those cases?
