If you're in Hanham you can go up the Jolly Sailor for a quick one.
Many of these sound like cockney rhyming slang.
On the other hand, we've identified a brexit bonus we call all rejoice in.
well they hadnt even held the referendum when they closed the Golden Lion in Ipswich as part of a 16 pubs block I think they closed that year
unfortunately Wetherspoons regularly close/dispose of pubs like this, more often in locations where they have other pubs, and also as property leases come up for renewal as they own very little property themselves, uniquely for a large pubco who usually have mortgaged themselves to buy lots of property they lease to pub tenants.
no doubt their annual report will highlight increased revenues against 2021 costs, uncertainty in the hospitality market following covid and changes in consumer habits, that theyve managed their cost base tightly to preserve margins, see only upward pressure on global energy prices and raw materials and on wages and so are cautious on outlook...no sorry wait that was Adnams interim trading report.
CAMRA have been warning the first half of this year saw on average 18 pubs per week close, and its expected to get worse this winter, so use them or lose them

Pubs clpse, and wine bar/cafes open
The market is changing in response to customer expectations. May pubs were busy due to there work location. Factories, mines, shipyards close, so do the pubs.
The pub of old is not longer appealing to many who want to socialise. Gone are the days when you could not see into a pub before entering, as with bookies. Outdoor toilets across the yard. An overall feeling of grubbiness.
Not all, and the good ones remain, and survive, but the loss is no different to the closing of chapels. Built from the subscription memebers, now gone, converted or used by a different religion.
Still, they lasted longer than Blockbusters, Spud-u-Like and Ice Rinks.
Bring back skiffle, I say
wise words from the vicar - sadly not heeded

The traditional English pub has been in long term, fundamental decline for years. Umpteen reasons for this, principally far more options to spend your leisure time than in days of yore, plus the wide availability of cheap take-home booze. Many pubs have turned themselves into restaurants. The only pubs that I think can survive on "wet" sales ae those in city centres where there is a large enough supply of after work drinkers (no one goes to the pub at lunch time these days). I've always found the derision some reserve for Weatherspoons odd. Whatever one might think of the founder, they offer a wide choice of decent beers at a fair price & their food offering is better value than most pubs.
The Penderel's Oak was where I went at the end of my first week working in London, way back in 2001. It wasn't bad as Wetherspoons go, far better than the Shakespeare's Head round the corner.
I can't imagine hybrid working has been good for pubs in Holborn.

Indeed, more people working from home has been another major negative for pubs.

Might be a negative for city centre pubs, but not so bad for those close to where people live. The pub in my village in the Ipswich-Shotley-Sudbury Golden Triangle definitely benefits from home workers propping in for a.spot of lunch.
