Same for the beeb as well. They continually feel its necessary to over do it with the big ups to try to continue the hype they think they need to maintain about a less than interesting competition. Had enough of all of them I'm afraid.

He’s certainly putting to bed the criticisms that he’s never properly delivered at a tournament. I hope he goes on and wins it.
Notably though, I haven't heard any of the ITV commentators or pundits hold their hands up and admit that maybe they were jumping the gun when half way through the second Argentina game, they wrote him off as being past it.

Easy to do I suppose, as he often looks like a short Jonathan Douglas! Ridiculous how he can control games playing walking football half the time.
I don't think it's too OTT for Messi, he's one of the best ever, if not the best, and this is likely to be his final tournament.
However, broadcasters are desperate to have a "Superstar", or "World's Best", and they started this with Mbappe in 2018, I recall comparisons then of him to Pele by the BBC!
It was the same with Neymar when he burst on the scene - Brazil and Nike needed a new star and hyped him as such.
I've seen Messi and Neymar live at Barcelona - Messi was just brilliant, Neymar fell over a lot.
It's not that they all venerate one of the greatest players, arguably the greatest player, of the game but that they insist on calling everything he does as brilliant.
Put a free kick a couple of feet over the bar? "Brilliant!" Try a defence splitting pass but see it intercepted? "Brilliant!"
It devalues those occasions when he truly is brilliant IMO.

Totally agree. When Ferdinand and Shearer were drooling over him a few days ago some of the highlights were things I've seen Town players do. some of the clips they showed actually ended with him losing the ball or giving it away!
That said, I'm in the camp that says he's the best in the world - but please drool over the things that are really, really good and don;t just pick up on everything he does when others also do those same things (just less often!)

Right on.
The assist for the third goal was a decent run, but it wasn't exactly Hazard vs Arsenal, or Owen against Argentina, or Maradona vs England, or Henry vs Spurs....
