You see goals all the time conceded when it goes wrong. The difference usually is tho, those clubs are confident they can score enough to win that game.
It absolutely boils my p*ss at Portman Road when people are just screaming 'get rid' when an opposition striker is closing down one of our centre backs.
Our whole game is now based on that video, some people need to get with the programme.

Depends who's screaming it
My dad would be one of those but only because he comes from the years of defenders being defenders. Sometimes it's difficult for the older generation to accept modern football.

Bloke behind me on Saturday was bursting a blood vessel at Hladky passing it out. Everytime he got the ball he would should “get it up there” “just get rid of it” “just go long”

That's where you get it from then.

He wasn’t an Ipswich fan then? Because weren’t we on of the better footballing sides in the 70s/80s?

It's fine whilst also being very risky.

Maybe we can now have that luxury.
Indeed. The opening goal in Liverpool v Wolves in the FA Cup at the weekend for example. Keeper dawdling and then misplacing the pass rather than a CB, but same principle.
It's very obvious when it goes wrong, but it's a fashionable strategy at the top of the game at present for a reason. McKenna has the calibre to lead us in that direction. I'll try to enjoy the ride!

Of course. Bit I'd say the football was still more direct than modern high level football Is now. ( by direct I don't mean hoof) but faster in the movement of the ball not the waiting of the press before you started playing footy. But that's just how I'd imagine it was without actually seeing it.

FFS.
It is very contrary to what most of us would have been taught growing up and how most players would have been coached up to a few years ago. I'm sure there'd be a lot of shouting about 'fannying about in the penalty area' from coaches of yesteryear watching football today.

Even got our kids doing it...beat the press, and by the time we get the ball to the halfway line the opposition have committed 6-7 players in our half leaving space for our attacking players in their half...

i'm 73 and love to see the passing out of the back and the long cross field pass from our full backs. i think pep was the main stay of this style of play
forensic experts say footers and spruces fingerprints were not found at the scene after the weekends rows

Much prefer the patient approach to the "hot potato" ((c) EdwardStone) ill-directed passing style we've sometimes had in recent years. Where they'd get rid of the ball ASAP, usually to an opposition player.

...was that they really, really, really wait until the last moment to pass the ball.
Particularly Wolfie.
It's not just passing it around at the back......it's not good for my old ticker.
I love that it's got a name.
Lovely stuff.

It's not that risky. Or at least the risk comes down substantially the more it becomes ingrained as the way of playing. It's brave to adopt it and bloody hard to do from scratch. It makes it so hard for a new manager to come in an implement this philosophy when taking over from an old school one.
Lambert was out of his depth (and in fairness without the coaching depth) to implement it but brave (or something else) to do so. The better the player the easier as well.
How McKenna and his staff have us in L1 playing is remarkable really.
