McKenna Ashton Interview 16:39 - Feb 26 with 4115 viewspennblue

Interesting comments from McKenna about buying young and exciting prospects, which is not always going to give you instant success.

But McKenna is (rightfully) highlighting the fact that is what our player recruitment strategy is, and he is working within the constraints of that (you would assume), as opposed to going for a Sheff Wed type model, where we fill the team of 28-32 year olds who have more experience and 'nouse' to get out a League.

Just interesting I thought as 'promotion this season is a must' is not really compatible with our player recruitment strategy.

Well the thing I took from the interview is that promotion is not the be all and end all if not saying it directly. I suspect Ashton and KMc felt it necessary to put something out to calm a few fans down after the poor run recently and the mutterings about KMc from a few.

I'm all for it, there is no doubt whatsoever that we are forming a structure and strategy for the team albeit after a chaotic 6 months after the GC20 takeover. We'll get there just might need a bit of patience.

I would suggest to look no further than our own back yard , after watching our u18s in the last 2 cup rounds ….. certainly some up and coming talent amongst those lads .

The likes of Baggott and El Miz are coming through, they could be in and around the first team next season

Both could grow into this side, Valentine and Morgan both look like they could be useful wingers in seasons to come too

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

It will be interesting to see what happens to those 2. Personally I’m not sure either will be involved next season. I think Baggott may have some way to go and I just don’t see how El Miz gets a look in ahead of the players we have, especially if the rumours about Taylor joining in the summer are true

Baggott has had limited L1 game time so far, so cannot see him being part of our plans next season even if we do not go up. We need experienced central defenders so another loan. Baggott is still very young so has a lot of time on his side.

El Miz also needs to prove himself in L1, so a further loan to Orient if they go up is a possibility. He is not going to get ahead of our existing central midfielders and Taylor sounds like an odds on upgrade.

The recruitment strategy is about the long term not the short. They mentioned Rotherham and Wigan who are in danger of yo yo-ing back down. They are looking to continue going onwards and upwards, improving and strengthening areas.

It’s a strategy that requires patience, money (which we have) and a fair bit of nerve. There’s plenty of clubs and supporters that would prefer the get the experience and loanees in, get promoted now and worry about the future tomorrow.

The other thing I picked up on was how much discipline throughout the club has improved. Ashton said that initially things like transfer targets were leaking out of the club from all over place and that was harming transfer dealings and relationships with other clubs. That has now stopped and is an indicator that despite much larger numbers working at the club, it’s much tighter.

I know nobody really cares about this sort of thing, but personally I think it’s really important. A growing, all pulling in the same direction football club is bound to have a better chance of success than the Evans and Lambert style shrinking shambles.

It seemed to me that they have been listening to the fans concerns and answered them one by one.
Patience and a team for the future. They focused on home grown players and made it clear that this is just the early days of Kieran's management.
It was a Great way of Ashton giving a vote of confidence without the obvious negative rumours that follows a vote of confidence.

I found the interview very encouraging and reassuring that we are headed in the right direction

Yes, pretty clear from that interview that McKenna will be here next season regardless of what happens between now and the end of this season.

Non promotion is still a failure with our resources and the squad available Donnie. You don't have to agree of course but I think it's fair that the majority of the forum voted for promotion back in the summer as their minimum expectation. no point rewriting history on that front.

It was a strong interview, with two really intelligent people at the club to calm down a few over emotional fans.

Having seen some of the absolute dribble written over the past few weeks on here and on social media it was a good move.

Long term visions, outstanding structure in place, and one of the brightest young managers in Europe.

My three takeaways on 13:14 - Feb 27 with 1470 viewsunstableblue

1) UNITY & POSITIVITY - Ashton and especially McKenna are hearing the mutterings and the negativity, and have sensed the drop off in fan belief in the project of late. They get that this is ingrained from decades of mismanagement and poor performance. But they're imploring people to enjoy the process, enjoy the games, understand its a rebuild, and get behind the team and bring unity.

2) LONG TERM SUSTAINABLE PROJECT AND RECRUITMENT - They are trying to build a club infrastructure and squad that has longevity and real strength and depth, so that it can seriously compete in the Championship. Felt Burnley performances showed the promise, and that teams that spend on high wage older players are doing a quick fix to promotion which ultimately fails. They will continue to buy players who are young and room to grow rather, not quick fixes.

3) ITS ALL ABOUT ICREMENTAL PROGRESS AND PATIENCE - McKenna felt strongly that the metrics and performances show a marked improvement to last season, and he's pleased with the direction. Which is upwards. Understand fans want everything NOW, but that's not how it works. Fans have to be patient and again enjoy the journey. McKenna will be here till the end of next season, even if promotion fails.

For me the injuries to Ball, Camara and Evans have had a bigger impact than people realise. And the emergence and impact of Luongo reflects this.

I think our fan base has a lot of pent up negativity than means some of McKenna and Ashton sentiment isn't going to land. And the mutterings and disharmony - see Bristol Rover away - will continue: 'Failure to make automatics will be the greatest failing in the club's history@ etc

I still think the team has another gear that it will find with Burns, Jackson or Edwards finding some form on the right, Luongo staying fit, and Hirst scoring for fun. Think we could become very dangerous.

Fans need some big goal wins at home NOW, and to beat a Bolton, a Derby and/or a Barnsley away... get the universal belief back into the manager and team.

We live in an age of short term thinking and a country that has done short term for about 120 years and look what we’ve got. Many people are interested only in the now. ‘Not interested in a potential manager (or even developing the club), we want delivery now’ is the mood of many. Bring in Warnock, bring back Mick. Tried and trusted.

But it just doesn't work that way. If a club is in a mess like say Blackpool (see other thread) Mick, Guardiola or King Kong is not going to bring about anything that’s sustainable - see Rotherham and Wigan.

I think some people also forget just how bad it got under Evans.

Ipswich is a good club for the owners. Cheaper than a Newcastle where everything bar a team is in place, big enough with potential to make it worthwhile. Just go with it is my view - everything is falling into place far quicker than I thought it would overall.

Yes.

And you still have a negative view of the club ?, it’s about slow, steady, sustainable growth, the club has progressed this season and will continue to do so in future seasons.
Sheffield Weds finished in the play offs last season, Ipswich finished mid table
