So AI replacing people is underway... 12:44 - May 18 with 2594 viewsblueasfook

BT looking to lose 55,000 people (40% of workforce) by end of the decade, with many of those jobs replaced by AI. The future is not looking good for tech workers.

Time to seriously consider UBI and pay for it by taxing these companies more. For every £100 they save via new tech we should be taxing them a good chunk of that you future proof the economy.

This was the promise wasn't it? That eventually we would all work less and technology would do the work.

I'm sure we can expect the rewards to be shared around... /sarcasm

Truly impaired.

In the case of BT, this is well overdue - they are so incredibly manual, and have under invested in technology for a long time. It is being branded up as led by AI, cos that sounds cool and stuff, but really it is just adopting a lot of stuff some the top companies have been using for years

Agree this a genuine trend that will emerge, especially as people realize the true applications of AI rather than just jumping on the bandwagon

I think it might be more down to the fact that by the end of the decade all the old high maintenance copper network will have been replaced by low maintenance fibre, field engineering staff will not be required in any numbers. could and should have been completed 35 years ago, but that is another story.

That was certainly the promise. It seems the reality is a mixture of:

"You're poorer now, suck it up."

and

"You will own nothing and be happy."

What halcyon days in which we live!

We would have had broadband years and years ago if it wasn't for a certain well-loved prime minister...

On the main OP point though, this is basically what I was talking about in a different AI thread. The issue isn't going to be the apocalyptic warnings the press love to report but the societal shift that might come from this. Don't want to say it'll be like the industrial revolution but it's going to be a serious shift as the technology matures and the hardware requirements get cheaper.

Something will need to be done. Can't just render a vast number of the workforce redundant like that. Say worst case, 50% of jobs were made obselete by AI, then you're going to have mass poverty and unemployment. Probably a societal breakdown with mass crime and rioting. Plus the companies themselves wont make money because they'll have nobody who can afford to buy their products and services. I am a tech person myself but have severe reservations about AI in many ways. Governments and institutions need to wake up and start legislating and plannng for large scale AI roll-out.

The future is probably no wires at all. I have decent internet but 5G is significantly faster.

Whilst this is technically correct, the push for fibre infrastructure in London at the moment is crazy. At least two companies digging up all the streets installing 1GB up and down connections.

Pricing is reasonable as well, 1GB up and down for the same price as 300/20mb for Virgin.

The thinking behind that failure was the same dead hand that now has a grip on utilities and housing. Put out as 'That chrism it was not more than asset stripping

Thatcher like Truss, was never the brightest and so would happily warble out anything she was told. Selling off public owned assets was 'freedom', just as brexit isolation is freedom. Freedom to be excluded from free trade, travel and shared information. Arbeit mach frei.

That asset stripping has meant that innovation was starved of investment, leading to a long term productivity decline. And to the bizarre situation where UK railways are owned by European state owned companies enjoying far higher subsidies (pro rata) than before privatisation

Common sense tells you that for a holiday resort to be successful it needs the basics run properly, roads swept, bins emptied, lights working, toilets cleaned. Whereas in order to skim off as much money as possible, those tasks are handed out via the back door to mates whose motive is not a public service but private profit.

This can be seen right across the board with failing trains, dirty streets, potholes and so much not working any more. Don't maintain your car, use remoulds and cheap oil and guess what. UK PLC circa 2023.

The sad thing is that stupid people who often suffer the most from this, so easily fall for the lies, when their own eyes should tell them what is happening.

I fear it will have to get worse before it gets better.

It's already been going for decades, computer systems slowly replacing human activity. It's actually a good thing imo.

As for those that worry about jobs, new jobs will be created on the back of things changing, as it always has. Society will need time to adjust.

Change is good, so long as it's managed correctly. The miners of the 70s/80s are a good case example of how to not manage change effectively. AI will be a gradual change and most won't even notice that its happening.

It's not going to be like the miners of the 80s who got well and truly shafted when the government effectively closed down the industry without any notice in the UK.

Not sure what jobs you think will be replaced by Alexa? Alexa is the consumer end of tech, which in reality is very limited in power/abilities. What we have now as a consumer is normally a decade or so behind as it takes time for tech to propagate through.

Jobs will change undoubtedly. I don't see it as doom and gloom if AI/IT replaces some tasks it's been going on for ages now. It's one of the core drivers of society evolving.

And much as I respect Prof Pete, who was predicting ai software could be used to fix and repair telephony networks 30 years ago.

There was no business case for mass fibre roll out back then, you could get everything there was on the Internet, which was basically the complete lists of monty python quotes and reasons why Kirk was a better captain than Picard in a text file that fitted on a floppy disk. Nobody predicted Netflix,we had Blockbuster video, no one predicted Apple iTunes,we had tape recorders. Fibre was simply the stuff used for trunk network connections and media broadcasting where microwave wasn't suitable. No one was expecting a home would ever need fibre levela of bandwidth.

Plus unlike modern installations, there was felt to be a need not to dig up the roads for years on end to do it as it would inconvenience potential customers.

The ChatGP stuff, if it’s customer facing, will go the same way as overseas call centres and end up getting reversed. People want to speak to other people they understand.
