Ashes question 17:11 - Jul 20 with 1754 views | FrimleyBlue | With the rain forecasted Could England declare early to get oz back in bat to then just chase down a total to grab a win.. Otherwise if we keep batting to get a big lead.. aren't we just risking a draw? [Post edited 20 Jul 2023 17:11]

Ashes question on 17:13 - Jul 20 with 1713 views | Herbivore | Either way it's a risk to be honest. I don't think we'll bat until we're all out, it's a question of how much of a lead we look to get before we declare.

Think we'll look for a lead of 100. Or declare at stumps, whichever is sooner.

You could well be right. My instinct would be 150-200 if we can get there quickly but Stokes may look to be more aggressive than that.

Ashes question on 17:26 - Jul 20 with 1657 views | Vegtablue | Conversely Frimley, if we need to chase down a decent target in the 2nd innings when runs are harder to come by, we will find ourselves having lost time through the declaration. We're now in the position where we may unleash our attack without great concern for our wickets, which should deliver a high run rate. Batting on isn't always a case of avoiding the loss rather than prioritising the win. It's a balancing act of course and 100 runs is probably a good rough target. Go too long and time may be lost. Oz will reduce their batting risk in the 2nd innings if the draw becomes their only hope.

Saturday likely to be lost in its entirety though. Rain forecast for tomorrow 11am til 3pm Sunday, we need to be in bat all day.

Ashes question on 18:24 - Jul 20 with 1519 views | FrimleyBlue | Cheers all. Never been a big follower of cricket. But have really enjoyed these test matches. Are tickets quite easy to get or is it like football and membership priorities etc?

Tickets are normally on a Ballot system. Closed in November I think. You can get them now through ticket resale places, like Stubhub, but the last time I looked they were £350-£400 a day for the Oval [Post edited 20 Jul 2023 18:27]

Push on hard, see what happens. The best bet is to bat once, which will need a lead of at least 200, probably more. This is the best time to bat and get runs quickly. We should use it.

Agree. 67 run lead, 6 wickets in hand. Bat a session and declare with a lead of around 200. If the weather and conditions make batting difficult when the weather eases, so much the better. Long form cricket is great, though tbf I enjoy all forms of it.
Ashes question on 18:57 - Jul 20 with 1413 views | HARRY10 | It looks very unlikely there will be a result. No play tomorrow until after 2pm (rain). 80-90% chance of rain all day Sat, then possibly intermittent showers Sunday Go for it Friday afternoon and get what you can, then put the Aussies in for an hour or two Friday evening session Hopefully with bad light England can bowl them out Sunday

Tomorrow looks on and off, could be fine. Saturday looks lousy. All day sunday to bowl. Probably a bit tomorrow as well.

I think we will have enough chance to skittle them, it just depends on how stubborn they are. Hats of to England though, I thought we would narrowly lose every Test.
