Yeah, it was just supposed to conjure up the ridiculous image of a Rod Hull impersonator and Emu fighting with a Michael Parkinson impersonator who are then fighting with a Russel Harty impersonator fighting with Grace Jones.
Unlike modern chat show hosts, he didn't try to be funnier, cleverer or more interesting than his guests, and it meant we got to know much more about the guests.
