Tyreece Simpson now on Northampton's substitute bench on 16:45 - Sep 18 with 4533 views | ChampionsofInnsbruck | If we are honest, if he was good enough for the first team here, he would have played. He did well at Swindon in the 4th tier, but there was no evidence to suggest he would tear it up for us as a result. He may have thought he was better than being a fringe player at Ipswich, which is fair enough, because he wouldn't have got in the team ahead of anyone last season, would he? Why would he stay on that basis?

At Ipswich and Barnsley there would have been a lot more scrutiny on his activities outside of the game. Who knows what is monitored at Oldham? He did relatively well at Ipswich, and Barnsley, and scored something like 40 goals in his 4 seasons in the third tier, not bad, but there's a reason he's back down to that level. Had he had more focus when he arrived here and pushed himself more off the field, he probably would have done better. He worked really hard for the team, but you got the feeling he wasn't living the right lifestyle off the pitch which hampered his performances.

Made me think of Drinan and wondered how he was doing. Came on for the Pig on Saturday for his first minutes of the season. Thinking L2 is probably his ceiling, see if he gets many more minutes this season.

Yep, very easy to be critical but Huddersfield gave him 10x the wages he was offered here, and on a 4 year deal. I doubt there are many people that would turn down the opportunity to earn over a million quid over 4 years, as well as the belief that you're closer to Championship football (at the time). I never really rated him, said as much at the time, he's an athlete but so raw and so evidently relatively late to football. Positionally he was naive, but hit a purple patch at Swindon which he (and Town) did well to cash their chips on. He'll probably score a few over the next 10 years at the lower levels but I wouldn't think he'll amount to much more than that.

He's still way ahead of where Freddie Ladapo was at the same age, and two or three years younger than Freddie was when he began to cut it in the league at all. As you say, time will tell if there was ever much more to him than youthful exuberance and athleticism.

Not often you'll get offered the opportunity to work under a coach and staff of KMs magnitude as a youngster.... Humphreys and Baggot know the score. Wise heads on young shoulders, those two. Be interesting to see where Simpson is in 2 years time, when we are in, or knocking on the door of the Prem'.
Tyreece Simpson now on Northampton's substitute bench on 09:31 - Sep 19 with 3107 views | itfcsuth | He's only 21, being on the bench in L1 isn't a real issue in his development - he is still involved and getting minutes - and battling with the main no.9 Appere for a spot. He has a long term contract with Huddersfield so still time on his side. It is actually a shame he left because I think working under KMc would have really been big for his development on the technical side of things.

But he wasn't offered that opportunity, when he came back from half a season of first team football he was with the U21s and offered a contract of the level of an U21 squad player, not a young first teamer liker Humphreys and Baggott had signed. He made the best decision for him, by a long way, and still has 3 years left on his contract - he's in a very good position to make a good living out of football

Will be on £2k+ a week there (on the cautious side). Its nearly half a million (pre tax) contract, by the time he is 24/25. It was a really good deal for him.

Does make you wonder what he could've achieved under Kieran's coaching.

Only time will tell. I have no axe to grind at all, but even if he did take a contract worth £1m, if his career crashes and burns he could quite easily be worse off in the long run. Of course, his agent taking 10% of his current deal will be much better off, whatever happens.

And what guarentee is there that he'd have had any better career here than he would've done at Huddersfield? We've not really shown any willingness to give our youngsters opportunity here have we? He's taken a decent contract that sets himself up nicely.

Where did I say there was any guarantee? There is also no guarantee that taking a big payday will lead to a career. Of course, a bird in the hand etc... But...

There are might be some scenarios where kids make a mistake moving for more money, but it's unlikely this is one of them. Seems to me that academies do sometimes have a limited amount of coaching attention and first team opportunities to go round, and you might be better off being the absolute star boy at one club, rather than just another talented kid amongst many somewhere else. Definitively not the case at Ipswich, where Simpson doesn't seem to have been especially rated by the club and we offered him a contract reflecting that. Huddersfield, having already invested some money in him, are likely to much more persistent in trying to get his career going.

What like Joe Pigott... or Bonne... or Fraser.... or the other players released? McKenna isn't a magician. He can't turn every player into a superstar. Maybe it's worked out best for Simoson and us.
