I think it is probably the right decision.
Maddison’s best position is a number 10, but you would have him behind Bellingham, Foden and Palmer. It is very likely that Palmer’s emergence this season is what has cost him.
If you look at him as a wide forwa4d, which personally don’t believe is his strongest position, he has even more players ahead of him. Even Rashford is likely ahead of him in that role and he didn’t even make the enlarged squad.
Finally comparing to Wharton and Mainoo is comparing apples and pears. These two have been given a chance in the central midfield spots, due to Henderson’s age and decline, as well as the extremely poor form of Phillips. It is still likely that Wharton may still miss out too. |  | | |

He lacks substance to his game and versatility, which makes him easier to mark out of a game at an international level. There are better players remaining in the squad who are better at tracking back, tackling as well as their attacking abilities. [Post edited 6 Jun 2024 14:19]

Mainoo has had a great season in a poor Utd team
Wharton has been great for both his clubs and looked very good at the weekend.
JM is a luxury player, not exactly young and Southgate knows his style. I think it's a good decision and I hope he is strong and keeps the two youngsters in midfield and leaves the likes of Grealish and Toney at home. Same with Henderson (GK), time for Trafford to be No.3 and get some experience as he is the future. |  | | |
