Hello clever IT hiveminds.

I am bravely (foolishly?) going to attempt a battery replacement myself. Has anyone any suggestions for any little gizmo that I could use to safely clean the inner workings while I'm there? Is there a safe vacuum device or something? Useful suggestions welcome; rude or funny ones equally appreciated. Thanks.

I’d be reluctant to do much cleaning at all, unless there is a fan in there. Dust won’t affect the electronics.

If it does look bad google “can compressed air” or similar. Blow, don’t suck. Ahem.

You can get cans of compressed air to spray through it....

Sorry to hijack your thread but does anyone know why my Macbook keeps freezing, then restarting itself? Seems to happen most days, at least once and is very annoying.

As other people have mentioned, you want compressed air. When using it, don't hold it down, very short bursts are what you want.

@noggin, that sounds like kernel panic, potentially faulty hardware. It probably would require taking into a shop to get someone to take a look. If I was to take a guess given the frequency of the crashes, probably one of the sticks of RAM has got a fault.

You might need a device to earth yourself to prevent static damaging the inside of the computer. I remember my Dad using one when he was tinkering around with old PCs. Not sure if it's still a thing though.

I did this when upgrading the RAM in my old Mac Mini and my wife's old imac. Not certain how important it really was but didn't want to risk it

Go to the repair section of the iFixit.com site and look up your Mac model. Has tear downs of all assemblies for Mac and other products. Also info on the tools required for every job.

I know nothing about repairing them them, but Macs can go on and on if the hardware was a decent spec in the first place. My work machine is a late 2012 iMac and it's still flying along. I've got 2 PCs and 2 (and about to be 3) laptops that have bitten the dust in the same time. I'm just now in the last 6 months or so starting to not get the latest Microsoft 360 updates, but I don't really need them as the older versions are still working fine. Why spend money every 3-4 years when a Mac lasts for 12+ years?

So i suspect it's well worth you having a go as long and patching it up and keeping it going.
