Wow what a tournament! The intensity of most teams is incredible 20:40 - Jun 17 with 2211 views | unstableblue | Real athleticism - both Austria and France absolutely going for it here. England need to realise they need to start treating these games like those big Premier League games. Where it’s relentless tempo. We know players do this regularly for their clubs. The eventual winner of the tournament will be the one who can maintain that intensity and energy. German and Spain show in spades. And France tonight have such a desire to keep the ball moving and in play. Goal for them now just from being relentless.

We play with the sun lounger in mind. Spain, Germany, France: miles ahead of the rest. I’ll be interested in how Portugal do.

International tournaments are littered with teams that started on fire only to fizzle out miserably. France, Spain and Argentina have recently made finals despite having stunk the place out in their opening game. My problem is with the words ‘Southgate’ and ‘stroke of genius’ appearing in the same sentence. The only time I believe it could work is… In what may prove to be a rare stroke of genius, the FA have acted swiftly to relieve the country of two or three more games of archaic long ball tactics, by replacing Southgate with the technically more progressive approach of Gareth Ainsworth. France are quite fortunate that Austria are sh*t. Far too many unforced errors and poor decisions from them. A bit unconvincing from France although they’ve still looked rapid and a threat on the break.

This. OP went too early with an eagerness to discredit England.

Sh*t is a bit harsh! I thought Austria played well. Their press was particularly impressive, they were just missing a bit of quality in the final third. [Post edited 17 Jun 2024 22:05]

Pitches and stadia are excellent, and the crowds and support for each nation is partisan and loud. That’s what fires up the players. It’s a great tournament.

I think it’s been a fantastic tournament so far too but I found that France match pretty boring to be honest. Not as boring as our match but it lacked fluidity, so much play acting and the referee was poor.

I thought it was a good game. Austria game it a go, Just didn't have anyone to get a goal. The ref though. So biased towards France.

It was a much better game than England Serbia in my view, not least because Austria were a far better side than Serbia. Shame they didn’t know how to finish. France will undoubtably grow into the tournament. Their defence in particular is excellent and with those forwards they’re going to trouble the best. I agree re the histrionics and play acting. It spoiled an otherwise good contest. I hate it. The French in particular feel they have the right to run the game and the ref, who was dreadful, bent to their will and just about every marginal decision went their way. I can understand why the Austrian fans were annoyed. The tournament is great though. Far better than playing them in stupid places like Qatar and South Africa. I’d see all tournaments played in proper footballing countries.
