Microsoft? That's that Windoze thing ain't it? Soooo 1990's baby. Full of bugs and, inefficiencies and back doors. Tosh.

Windoze machines have been having a worldwide crisis of confidence since they saw what one of their silly brethren came up with as a Premier League prediction the other day.

Joking aside a lot of companies still use XP. It is still supported by Microsoft at that level and is a very stable OS.

Given this is a world wide issue, I'm going to guess a DNS problem which is causing knock on effects.

That's not been in support for ages, unless we're talking about unpublished deals with MS. Anyone using it and connected to the internet would be a massive security risk.

I am not savvy with this type of issue. Could it be an attack and is it possibly that home networks will be affected?

In terms of domain resolution for system updates, or the OS is relying on live access to third party systems? Perhaps a BSoD isn't what it used to be? We're reliant on some very sub-optimal architecture still, I guess.

For the home user it is not supported but it is for big businesses who would have to pay multi millions every time a new Windows version is released. Like you said, they have deals with MS.

I liked XP. It worked, without too much extra jubbly stuff or stopping you tweaking things.

Yeah, just seen that it might be a Crowdstrike update causing it. I feel sorry for the poor developer that's caused this.

Definitely not good news.

Systems auto update. The update causes the crash.

So until they fix, it's either don't turn on/ turn on and crash. Unless you can turn off the auto update quick enough.

Hopefully the people trying to fix have separate stand alone systems not currently BSoD'd

There's a workaround on laptops.

Options for workstation resolution
Workaround from CrowdStrike:
Workaround Steps:

Boot Windows into Safe Mode or the Windows Recovery Environment
Navigate to the C:WindowsSystem32driversCrowdStrike directory
Locate the file matching “C-00000291*.sys”, and delete it.
Boot the host normally.

Option 2: (if users are experiencing a blue screen)
1. With the workstation powered off, hold down the F5 key and power the workstation on
2. Hold the F5 key down until you see a message at the bottom of the screen saying it is diagnosing issues
3. Release the F5 key and let the workstation attempt repairs
4. When repairs are completed, it will reboot normally
Option 3:
1. Boot the workstation into Safe Mode and do a System Point restore to the last know good configuration.
2. When the restore is complete, it will reboot normally

Not sure if it's connected, but just walked the dog and stopped for a coffee (near Canary Wharf) lots of smart casual, flip flops, 'banking' types getting upset because none of their banking apps working on their smart phone or chip and pin. Oohh dear never mind this old duffer was fine as I paid with cash. Told everyone in there moaning, cash is working.
