Yeah, just seen that it might be a Crowdstrike update causing it. I feel sorry for the poor developer that's caused this.

Definitely CrowdStrike ...

I am not savvy with this type of issue. Could it be an attack and is it possibly that home networks will be affected?

It's Just Stop Oil protestors. They've glued themselves to a server.

Definitely not good news.

Systems auto update. The update causes the crash.

So until they fix, it's either don't turn on/ turn on and crash. Unless you can turn off the auto update quick enough.

Hopefully the people trying to fix have separate stand alone systems not currently BSoD'd

To be fair, this isn't Microsoft's fault. Something similar could easily have happened on a Linux box I'd imagine.

I kind of assumed it was an OS update thing with the blue screen of death comments, but it's third party software is it?

Not sure if it's connected, but just walked the dog and stopped for a coffee (near Canary Wharf) lots of smart casual, flip flops, 'banking' types getting upset because none of their banking apps working on their smart phone or chip and pin. Oohh dear never mind this old duffer was fine as I paid with cash. Told everyone in there moaning, cash is working.

Software update from CrowdStrike - currently taking 15 mins per server to recover in our environment.

Certainly seems that way, there was a bit of confusion at my place as Azure had a major wobble last night and we weren't sure if it was related.

Luckily we're not affected but a few of our providers have been.

I went into Screwfix this morning and was told I wouldn't be able to use a card. Luckily, I always carry some cash with me for such eventualities, even though I don't use cash otherwise.

Just reading through the fix, I feel sorry for people who have BitLocker enabled with a long password. You don't have enough time to type the password before it BSODs.

And just for those who are wondering, this is possibly one of the worst outages I can think of with a fix that requires being physically present with the computer to fix it. This will take some companies weeks to solve.

It was an update rolled out by CrowdStrike.

So not actually Microsofts fault but has affected Microsoft OS.

So if the Just Stop Oil protesters got four to five years does this mean Bill Gates is going down for life ?

Or how about the companies and government departments running understaffed call centres which keep people hanging on for hours?

There is quite a bit to unpick in that question. Clearly the waste of energy, of electricity and all the ancillary equipment of call centres is a weight upon this World as people also lose their productive time just hanging on the telephone. An efficient system would also be a more sustainable and resilient system, better for the nations.

Then there is the matter of why the call centres are understaffed, poor funding or difficulty in recruitment ? Do many people see working in a call centre as a dead end with little hope of progression ?

But I can't really engage with all this as my hearing impairment means that I contact a call centre only as a very, very last resort and if I am put on hold the terrible music ramps up my tinnitus and I can only give it five minutes.

I assumed everyone did that, but based on my experience earlier clearly not.

I particularly enjoyed one bod, who when I mentioned cash works replied it's 2024 not 1954, I was able to reply then in 2024 you'll have to go without your coffee, t0sser.

I suppose I was looking at the new statutory public nuisance offence which is drafted in terms of an act or omission which creates "a risk of ... serious harm to ... a section of the public" and pondering whether it could be applied to call centres and the like.

To be honest I was stretching things a bit far, and maybe a call centre wasn't the best example, but what about an GP's surgery or even an A&E department which could lead to harm or death by not offering the proper services, with the act or omission being inadequate government funding.
