When I was in the sea scout in the 70s what these days are known as kayaks were known as canoes.
EDIT: I came across this in Wikipedia, and it suggests to me that the distinction between kayaks and canoes in this country is a more recent development.
In British English, the kayak is also considered to be a kind of canoe. [Post edited 1 Aug 2024 15:38]
