Car crash / insurance question if anyone could help pretty please 14:45 - Aug 5 with 2177 viewsgiant_stow

I just managed to get my car squished in a lorry's blind spot. No damage to the lorry, but half my old Civic's front is missing. First crash I've ever had, so what do I do? Do I *have* to tell the insurance? Cos it was just mine damaged, I was thinking of going to local garage to see if they could bodge it up cheaply? If I have to call the insurance, so I have to wait for them till I fix it? Got the guys details / he's got mine. Do I have to tell the police?

Sorry if these are stupid questions - maybe I'm just shaken at ruining my no crash record.

I hope you and anyone else involved are all fine.

If there are no injuries and no blockage to the road, the police do not need to be informed. I think technically it is supposed to be reported to the insurer but I don't know and a repair at your own expense may be the best route.

if he isn't going to claim against you, technically you have no need to tell your insurance company. in some instances, it can work out in your favour - but, depends on the damage. if it's pretty bad, they may write the car off. I've seen that happen loads for even small damage.

did you get pictures e.c.t of both?

Yeah I got some crap photos, but wasn't thinking straight. In truth, it was more my fault than his (just) so morally, I should pay. It ripped off the front wing and a lot of the front bumper thingy, leaving a head flight bulging out like a popped eye - have I just cost myself a new car.by writing off a perfectly good, if ugly runner? Gawd what a dick. Anyway. That ks for rhe advice - appreciated.

Fine on assessing damage to see whether it's worth making a claim, but i thought you are supposed to report accidents to insurers. I'm not sure whether that's a legal requirement or just advice.

There's always a chance the other party could later on decide to make an issue of it, so best to collect all the evidence and log it imo.

if its just the bumper mate, either botch it yourself. (I did this after hitting a deer)
doesnt look great by any accounts, but if you can't see any metal work damage underneath the bumper - you should be able to see, then you might be alright.

you can get bumper replacements too, go to a scrappy or look on ebay for a 2nd hand one.
sometimes it's more hassle to go through insurance, especially if you don't really need to.

any doubts, look on youtube on how to push things back in and make it look half decent, most things are generally clipped on around the bumper areas.

Cheers Swansea, thought I'd heard something like that. He may report it, just be dint of being a professional driver I spose.

honestly I have no idea, maybe depends on what kind of accident it is.. from what I've read, small scrapes and bumps aren't a requirement, but larger ones should be - so all depends on that.

You do need to tell your insurer unfortunately if you have been in an accident, no matter how minor and even if no claim will come from it. It might bite you in the arse if the other party does make a claim then you will be asked why you didn't inform them. Unless there is a claim, then it wont affect your NCB - may affect your next premium a little though.

Mental that is the case isn't it.

We are pushing towards a society like the yanks where everyone and everything is at fault due to this where there is a claim bs.

Hope you're doing ok and look after yourself the next few days. I had an accident back when I was 18 or so that was minor really and I was fine at the time (if not a bit angry) but once any shock wears off it can be upsetting. Take care.

I would report it to my Insurer but state you have no intention of making a claim and will cover the repair at your own expense. Trouble is you exchanged details, so if you don't report it, and the other guy later finds some damage and decides to claim under his insurance, your insurer will want to know why you didn't contact them and you can get points/fined for not reporting an accident.

If nobody was hurt it’s only metal that can be replaced or fixed. Annoying but not the end of the world. Sh£t happens.

Notify your insurers. If the other party decides to report it or try anything, your insurers won’t thank you for not informing them.

Write out exactly what happened and where. What you said to the other mush. Diagram of the action and any pics.

I think that’s the way to go and what I did a few years ago when I ran into another car gently. Hardly any damage to either, but the b’stard tried it on.

The days of taking s9mebody’s word or threatening them (done both of those😀😱) are gone.

Don’t forget it’s costly and annoying but only stuff not people - stuff can be sorted out.

Thanks Mr, appreciate the ebenfit of your experience - sounds natural. The self anger is hitting me now - just taken it down the garage: internal stuff is buckled, new wing and head light bare min to the somehow reattach the bumper. Basically a write off of some shade. I'll call the insurance now. Feel like a fool - one who's about to spend a lot of money that I don't really have. Dickhead... Expensive lesson. Thanks for advice everyone.

As blue as said you must report it. It is a term of your policy that you need to advise of any claims or incidents that may give(n) rise to a claim. You do not have to claim for your own damage under your policy.

Depending on age and mileage etc insurers may write it off as uneconomical to repair.

You can look into getting it done on the cheap as insurers use genuine parts hence why repairs are expensive. You can look at green/ recycled parts and have them repaired by a local cheaper repairers. However ensure that the vehicle is genuinely road legal again, as you may find at next MOT it may fail because the cheap repairer has not done such a good job. Or worse case scenario involved in another accident and the car is not road worthy and the occupants died because of the poor repairs.

However it is not in their interest to make a bodge of it. As you can then sue them. I have unfortunately seen this happen.

You may find that it is not just the visual damage you can see, but the hidden structural issues that cost so much and causes problems in the future.

Anyway, always report it even if for information only.

So for those of you read very carefully the questions on your insurance quote as it will ask if any claims or incidents and not just for this vehicle, but also any claims you have under a works policy. It also works the other way, that your employer should declare any non work claims or incidents you may have under your own car/van/bike insurance.

Technically, it would be extraordinary if there is not a clause in the policy requiring it to be reported...

Even if you don't want to make a claim.

Just be careful if you're not going to claim and get it thoroughly checked. Cars are funny things and even if it doesn't look too bad and it's just a bumper, then you might have done something structural that isn't obvious to the untrained eye.

Whose fault was the accident?

I don't see from your posts why you are not claiming against the lorry driver's insurance.
