Tudor on 11:37 - Sep 2 with 4012 views | Sharkey | I wonder if he'd be the first Old Etonian to play for the club. The first chairman, (from 1878) Thomas Cobbold, was one, (as well as the other Cobbolds and David Sheepshanks). I know nothing about the very early days of the club, and whether the team (like many cricket, football and rugby clubs at the time) was a group of what the tabloids call 'toffs' playing for fun, augmented by local talent.

Phil. Was I right in thinking there is an ffp benefit to registering him as development signing rather than a normal one. Appreciate his age. But he looks a level and above other youngsters so seemed a bit strange it's seem as a development signing.

Having enough common sense to sign for us shows that maybe he's not that type of old Etonian!

Yes, I was curious about this - is he going to be available to play for the first-team immediately if needed or are there some restrictions?

He's under 21 so can play without needing to be registered for the first team. Sounds like he will just be involved in the U23s though. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

You'd think with so many players away this week, McKenna will have a good chance to have a look at some of McGreal's lads in first-team training. Every cloud...

The club was formed by old boys of Ipswich School, who had enjoyed playing football competitively since the school adopted the Association Rules in 1874. On leaving school, they looked for a club to join, couldn't find one, so started Ipswich Association Football Club, which became ITFC a decade later. Early games were mostly against Ipswich School, Fram College, Woodbridge School. We were exceptionally late in turning professional - 1936 - and that was due to an odd mix of supporter pressure and a close friendship between Ivan (John Murray) Cobbold & Samuel Hill-Wood of Arsenal. Several times a season, there are illustrated talks which cover this period, with some background tales that are quite surprising. They're generally advertised on twtd... or pm me if you know an organisation that would like to host one (real ale pubs especially.....!!!!!!!!)

I wonder if he has been bought in as a "development" player who may actually progress more quickly given his background. I guess if he makes rapid progress we may consider him in the FA cup for example.

I don't think so, assume his wages are taken into consideration as any other player, unless someone knows otherwise. Just think he's not seen as a first-team player at the moment, one for the future.
Tudor on 13:12 - Sep 2 with 2772 views | Pinewoodblue | Planning for the future. Next season Hutch & Delap will have to be registered in the 25 man squad. We are lining up their replacements as sadly our own academy isn’t yet strong enough to provide such players in sufficient numbers. Hopefully when we can achieve Cat1 things will improve. I'm studying Latin, Greek and Modern History at A level at the moment. Students who study these subjects have a wide range of options. I’m looking at Classics courses which opens other pathways like Philosophy, Law, Literature and Archaeology. Foreign policy and international relations have always interested me too. I can really go in any of these directions."
