It was probably unwise because of his position that he was in.
If he had an affair with a 20yo woman, nothing would have been said. If he was a woman and had an affair with a 20 yo man, nothing would have been said.

If it had appeared that Schofield had been involved in helping the woman getting work experience at the age of 15, and then got her a job at 16 started an affair with her at 18 and then lied to bosses and colleagues about it when directly asked.
Then it would have looked very much like 'Schofe' had engaged in grooming her just as much as it did with the lad involved, and had used his position of power over her to do it.

Fair point - but I’m pretty sure that a lot of the news surrounding this wouldn’t have been as intense if he had an affair with a young woman. Can’t prove my theory at all, simply a hunch.
