Conor and one or two others 10:53 - Oct 4 with 2967 views | turtle2 | Indulged myself - and quite a little emotional I have to say - last night watching youtube highlights of us over the 2 back to back promotion seasons - what an absolutely magical time and fantastic group of players. It made me realise just how much Conor , Burns, Broadhead - not to mention many of the others - contributed to our success and how well they played ! It now worries me - particularly with Chaplin that although he is part of a Premier League Squad and "potentially" he'll get his chance - I suspect he wont sit around forever waiting - he's always going to be a Championship type top goal scorer and a few Premier league teams may consider him first or second choice for his role. My favourite player has been Broadhead for a couple of years and same rules apply - going from absolute central and succesful roles to third and fourth choice type players may last a while - but I suspect not too long. Lets see
Conor and one or two others on 11:16 - Oct 4 with 2837 views | Churchman | Broadhead can play at PL level. Quick feet, great awareness and can finish well. It’s really a question of fitness with him. Chaplin? Not so sure at this level, but he will get his chance and we will see. While I agree entirely with you re the last two years, I can understand why McKenna has done what he has. The gap between the two divisions is a chasm and we had to try and bridge the gap. First choices now back ups? Sadly that was bound to happen, but nothing can take away what all those players achieved and neither do we/they know what the future holds. One or some could be first choice by seasons end. Who knows.

I am sure they are all going to want to fight tooth and nail to get minutes and to force their way into contention. Someone like Chaplin has played over 300 games to get to the point where he gets his chance to dine at the top table - he's not going to give that up without real fight. What you can't afford to do is to not take any chance you get with both hands. Taylor has been given a couple of cameos in recent weeks and really taken them.
Conor and one or two others on 11:33 - Oct 4 with 2738 views | unstableblue | Chaplin is Mr Ipswich, seems very settled in the area and club, is hugely popular, and perhaps in his mind wanted to see his career out here. But the Premier Level is higher than expected. BUT, he will be playing a huge role in training, and in squad culture. AND he is currently making the matchday squad - think how Wolfie and Burgess feel?! AND he will get a chance, Taylor a few weeks back you’d think was completely on the periphery, but he’s almost pushed himself ahead of Luongo and perhaps even Cajuste. Huge impact on introduction.

totally agree we've done exactly what we "had / needed" to do - McKenna knows what he's doing - we all agree on that - brutal though isn't it - cohesive brilliance pulled apart in the name of the next level up - nothing we can do different ! Bloody impressed so far this season

I don't know that they will get a chance, unless we get lots of injuries. Not really. There are reasons why they've not made Premier League before - when it comes to it, they are not at the highest, highest levels when it comes to areas such as skill, pace, fitness. It is a very high bar. And even if they do, and play well, we'll still be looking for even better. Woolfenden, Burgess are really good players, but are reserves now. And if we stay up they'll be replaced, and it'll be O'Shea who'll be looking over his shoulder. I don't like it, really. It changes too fast. And it'll continue to do so. Anyone who is really good will get snapped by the big clubs above. Any anyone who isn't quite good enough will be replaced. Our current team will have changed massively again in the next 2 years. Ah well! That's the nature of being a football supporter. Golly, I'm turning into an Elephant.

Yeah. I don't mean to sound harsh but Chaplin almost played himself out of contention - he struggled to hit his peak at the end of last season so I can see why he's now a finisher. Once Broadhead is fit I imagine he won't even be on the bench. Similar to Luongo, though his struggles came more to the fore this season, against top quality opponents. I feel more for the centre backs as they did little wrong - bar Burgess' Wimbledon nightmare, but he'd already been dropped by that point.

If we had kept hold of Johnno then we wouldn't have been relegated the following season when Marcus was incapacitated. Pablo was cover and scored zero goals in the Prem. David Johnson would have done better, and only a couple more goals across the season would have kept us up. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Chaplin is equally loved everywhere he goes……including Portsmouth. I can see him going there on loan to help them in January. After that, who knows, but he has earnt the right to decide and will be a great influence wherever he is I am sure.
Conor and one or two others on 08:37 - Oct 5 with 1307 views | wrightsrightglove | Unfortunately it’s the brutal reality of football. I think if you’d said to Chaplin when he signed for us ‘you’re going to have two promotions and be able to call yourself a premier league player by the time you leave here’ he’d a) be absolutely buzzing with that and b) probably assume that those things were going to happen over 5-10years rather than 2-3 And I think the same goes for all of our ‘league one’ squad other than Broadhead and Leif who probably always believed they’d end up in the prem in some capacity eventually. He’s always going to be a legend at the club, he’s always going to be able to say he’s played in the premier league, he’s developed as a footballer and learnt so much about coaching in his time here and I’d imagine he’s been heavily financially rewarded for his success. I’d say that’s pretty good for a few years work. I think he’ll stay this season, making occasional appearances but his most important role will be instilling the spirit and work ethic in the new young players. Next season I can see him going back to Pompey if they’re still in the championship where he’ll be happy and a legend

Woolfie’s the one I feel for the most. He looked good in the first few games, or at least I thought so. I’d be more than happy to see him in the starting line up again. Starting off the season and then being rotated/dropped seems to make that one a bit harsher. Not that Burgess won’t be disappointed, I’m sure. He was immense last season.

Conor and one or two others on 09:16 - Oct 5 with 1204 views | tonybied | Chappers is already first or second choice at a Premier League club, one that he and his family are totally settled at and that he admits he loves. Broadhead - we don't know where he will be in the squad as he's been injured and our squad still hasn't settled yet, he could end up being first or second choice himself.
