Proper eerie Nuclear War drama. Easy to forget how WW3 was a real concern in the early 80s.

Some gentle mid-week viewing... by factual_blue 9 Oct 2024 14:59
And then tomorrow start reading Nuclear War: A Scenario by Anne Jacobsen.

Should it come to that, I'm heading for the gates of RAF Lakenheath, where I'll inject myself with several penloads of insulin, and then get vaporised by the heat of the explosion (at the moment of explosion, temperatures are hotter than the sun).

I wouldn't want to live in a post-nuclear world, and in any event anybody over 50 will be left to die anyway.

Pffft, you survived two world wars and the black death, a simple nuke won't stop you.

My name was put forward by my boss as he thought (incorrectly) that I had no romantic attachments at the time.

There were probably many more names on the lists than seats, as many wouldn't have turned up. I probably wouldn't have.

Although I don't know at what point you'd have been persuaded at gunpoint to go.

which is a good film, I dont think it comes close to relaying the tension and outright nearness of armageddon that was felt at the time, but its certainly one to watch to learn about that crisis.

as much as the nice man from the council tried to explain to a classroom of kids in the 80s who'd either watched Threads, or were made to read Brother in the Land for English lessons, which is basically like Threads the book the sequel, that local government and civil defence would carry on in these places and it was all going to be fine, and like it wasnt a secret building no-one knew about, everyone knew where the door was to it, he told us for a start.

there wouldnt have been anyone left in Ipswich to be forced to go to it, think about where we are in the UK, and what places surrounded us. Bentwaters, Woodbridge, Sizewell, Wattisham, Mildenhall, Lakenheath, Felixstowe.

and it was about as much use as painting your windows white and sitting under a table protected by your living room door was going to be, basically a distraction to make you think there might be some vague hope the authorities had it under control and knew what to do, but actually there wasnt ever going to be if it really really came to it.

Has anyone seen When the Wind Blows? It is an animated film from about the same time and on the same subject about a couple in the early stages of old age. The setting as far as I can remember never left their house. It is a long time since I watched it but their denial and we will be alright attitude was in a way as scary as Threads.

I love this film, an under appreciated one.

When I saw it I knew very little about that period. But it prompted me to read up more into the crisis. We get to know a lot about those Oval Office discussions because Kennedy was secretly recording.

I am always fascinated by these moments where those in power are under extreme pressure and the stakes are high. The "9/11: Inside the President's War Room" documentary is another excellent example, or the book "5 Days in London" about the early days of WW2 when France was about to fall and the new war cabinet had to decide what it's stance was on continuing the fight Vs negotiating with Germany.

As for Threads, it's so bleak it's almost like it's designed so that when the nukes do come, those who survive will be able to say "oh this isn't so bad after all!"

The entrance to the Kelvedon Hatch nuclear bunker (the main central government bunker, situated on the land of the Channon family of tory grandees) has a long corridor with leading to the very thick steel doors guarding the control room.

In the event of nuclear attack, anybody trying to get into the bunker would have been mown down by the couple of machine guns positioned outside the door. There was no shelter, so you'd die.

Automated sentry guns like we see in Aliens (directors cut) or are we talking actual men with guns?

I thought it did pretty good, particularly nice touch that when they are heading in to meet the Russian ambassador with the 'final offer' they notice smoke from the chimney where they are burning their documents.

What wasn't known by the Americans at the time, was the presence of lower yield 'battlefield' nukes in Cuba and that local commanders had authorisation to use them without further orders from Moscow. Had they pressed ahead with the invasion option, you then had the prospect of 1000s of American troops, maybe 10s of thousands, being obliterated in a blink. It's doubtful Kennedy could have avoided the pressure to escalate in that scenario.
