O'Shea playing right back..... on 20:28 - Oct 10 by portmanking
Are you sure? Looks like he's scratching around, well short of confidence IMO.
The only player coming out with any credit so far is Finn Azaz, he's such a fluent player.
Not sure it's lack of confidence, more lack of opportunities. Ireland don't look like they can sustain a forward move, neither are players finding any space to be passed to.

It's a bit of both, IMO. Ireland are a really poor side to watch - and that's not good to say when it contains three of your own players!

It's not so much individual quality, more cohesion and attack-mindedness (or lack thereof).
Partly. Although I do think Szmodics has been away off it tonight. He even looks like he knows it. Kelleher is such an efficient keeper. Such a shame we didn't push the boat out for him.

Must be difficult for players training daily one position then playing another with other players.

He had a reasonably good game in an unfamiliar position. Roasted once or twice but mostly used his arm/body to block any any progress. One notable occasion he reverted to CB and left his man totally free. He also provided a small attacking threat down the right but mainly gave the ammo to Ogbene. I have to say that I am not seeing this amazing speed he is reputed to have. I did like the way Ireland played sometimes 4 and other times 3 at the back. Brady pushed up on the left, I wonder is that an option for us? Brady ended up man of the match.

Speed is a funny thing at times, Ogbene is meant to be an absolute rocket but on early evidence, you'd think Burns was quicker
Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

There is no pushing the boat out for him - we literally could not have reached the price they would've wanted and his wages. He was never achievable.

My hunch is his speed record was one of those eyeballs-out sprints you sometimes see from CBs following a corner cock-up and lightning opposition counter, maybe with a gale-force Burnley wind behind the chap. Could be that after 70 metres he threatens the speed of sound but from what I've seen his acceleration is about normal for a central defender.

At one stage in the first half O Shea looked like he was running in quicksand with a Finnish player just breezing past him. I found it very odd given we apparently signed him with pace in mind.
As a side note he’s got less pace than Wolfie on the new FIFA/EA Sports, which I found amusing.
My hobbies include being quiet during trips, clapping with songs, and diabetes.

Trouble with speed, is that there is physical speed (how fast you run) and speed of thought. There is this misconception that physical speed will always get a player out of trouble. But in todays modern football most players are quick. So if a CH takes only a second longer to think, the opposition player has gone past them and the CHs quicker running speed is irrelevant.
Italy won a Euros (and a few years ago a World Cup) with two of the slowest (physical speed) CHs you could find. But both were viewed by the vast majority as the best two CHs in the world, because they had fantastic speed of thought. That allowed them to read the game and make great decisions, ie they didn't need the ability to run fast. Same with our own John Wark, when he reverted to CH he didn't have the physical running speed, but his thought was fast and he was great at reading the game.
What I've seen of O'Shea is it does look like he's a bit slow in thought process. So in that extra second he needs to decide if he's going towards a player or tracking the player, that player has gone beyond him.
To be fair to him, he came to Town after the season had started, so he's learning new team mates, tactics etc. Unfortunately during international breaks he can not continue developing those understandings as he's playing for Ireland. Where he is also learning a new manager, tactics, different positions. Which means he looks lost sometimes, bit like Szmodics actually.
With time as he gets a better understanding hopefully his decision making will improve.
