Leif massively buckled under the pressure ala Leeds last year 16:47 - Dec 21 with 1806 viewsITFC_84

Newcastle, his home team, have had a field day down their right hand side.

To be fair they have had field day down both sides.

It is one thing that does seem to effect him. It's not often he's on song when he has a big game. Not sure if he lets nerves get the better of him or what it is but he often makes mistakes in big games.

I would be tempted to see him play in a wide left position with Townsend behind him.

That might be required in games like this

He didn't play well but there were contributing factors, can't look at these things in isolation.

- He's told to get forward so does.
- Szmodics and Hutchinson offered very little help defensively. He's got 2 or 3 men to mark during one of the goals.
- Newcastle did well on that flank.

So not a good day for him but to say he buckled under the pressure is going a tad far in my opinion.

The entire team buckled under pressure. It was men against boys

Defence overrun, midfield like a sieve and forward line unable to hold the ball.

But games like this will happen in the Prem. I still think heavier defeats will come.

Midfield like a sieve I think describes our approach a lot this season. Can't be like that in the Prem with the quality we have.

Leif got no help from the set up.

We've seen all season he works best with Sammy left. Nit Sammy uptop hutch or chappers left but Sammy. Why? Because he tracks back.

Davis was on his on his own today.

a niche perspective

He’s definitely not good enough for the prem and is definitely not a defender. Brilliant going forward but at this level absolutely lost and clueless defensively.

Not that you're overreacting or anything.

What nonsense.

Context and the complexities of the game are clearly lost on you.

As mentioned by the OP, it was a big game for him. It's his home town and the team he supports. It might not be that big to you and me but I'm pretty sure it was big to him.

Agree. All of this puts him into a purgatory of not being able to get forward whilst trying to defend (never his strength) against top talent.

Most teams have us figured out:

- target our right
- let us have the ball for endless phases and then break instantly down the right or through the middle against a really high line

I know that was then, but it could be again..

I think that those saying that Davis is out of his depth are wrong. However those who are crying for him to be playing left back for England also are looking with blue tinted glasses on. I've watched a few games on the TV with neutrals and often they've pointed out that they think Davis isn't being picked for England because he's not good enough defensively.

The guy has a lot of talent going forward and is a large part of how we play and contributes so much going forward and without him we would not have got to the Premier League I'd say. So if you think he's out of his depth you need to give your head a wobble. He's still young and still has time t improve.

However when it comes to the defensive side of his game I still think he has to get better. I think he has done so many fantastic things for us, but at Premier League level the defensive side of his game is getting found out. I do wonder if that moving to three at the back might help solidify us up and also allow him to still get forward without being exposed so regularly.

Poll: Should Davis have been sent off?
