I feel this is the weakest area in the squad. We seem to lack the legs / energy in the middle of the field especially when Cajuste isn’t playing or when he is subbed.

If Phillips, Cajuste, Morsy and Taylor are fit and in reasonable form, then I think it is absolutely fine. Can't play Phillips tomorrow, so a little light I guess, but back to normal for the rest of the season after that. I would like to see Phillips and Morsy with Cajuste just in front, but McKenna doesn't tend to do that and I ain't arguing with KM's game plan. |  |

Phillips and Taylor are about our most mobile centre mids although Cajuste does mitigate this through other qualities

Much like 541 switch, there are times when we should sacrifice one of the 10's for another central midfielder too
We have lacked someone who really pulls the strings in the middle of the park for some time, someone who dictates the tempo of the game
That's perhaps a symptom of coming from League One, we don't have that midfield general who dominates the midfield | |

I'm with you. People keep saying we need another centre forward, but it's no good if the don't have the ammo to shoot and seeing as we have been informed we are pretty low on the number of shots. Delap is a decent forward, but he's being asked to do everything. To hold up the ball, bring other players into play and score. Teams have sussed this out as with Brighton where he is trying to beat two centre halves. Broadhead is a skilful player but is neither a number 10 or a midfielder. KM has seen that we can't dominate teams so he's gone for five at the back with the idea that we hit teams on the break. But again many have sussed us out, push us back so when defenders just hoof the ball upfield there's either only Delap or nobody. The ball comes straight back at us and even with five defenders a deflection here and there or a ball dropping nicely for an attacker ends in the back of our net. | | | |

I think we need both - a centre forward and another central midfielder. Luongo would be moved on to make space; he is clearly fifth in the pecking order right now.
I do agree we sometimes need to think about adding a third CM to the team to flood the middle. Tomorrow may be one of those times. The issue is the lack of options at ten for now - we have a lot of wide players available, but can anyone play central? In that scenario, the current solution might be to play Hirst and Delap together, but that would leave us light on the bench. | |

Phillips was the "new Kante" back in his glory Leeds-England days. Never stopped running and read the game. He's not at that standard anymore IMO. Doesn't cover the same quantity of pitch as Kante. [Post edited 18 Jan 12:24]

The other issue is that playing 3 across the back means we have already reduced attacking players by 1. A 3rd midfielder changes the shape completely. | | | |

Think the opposite. It's our strongest part when Philips and cajuste are playing. Are people really saying cajuste is not that mobile. He is one of our quickest players. Great at turning away from players, had a burst of speed to get away from people. Only trouble is he is too deep so has nowhere to go when gets away. Not sure about this. I think we need a long term successor for Morsy and ideally yes I think someone with more legs/running power would be good. Cajuste is pretty good for the dynamic running side.
BUT....It's a bit harsh because essentially the way we set up is for the midfield to be a bit of a platform and nothing flash. Protective unit with the attacking unit (either 4 or with wingbacks it can be 5 in possession) ahead of them essentially tasked with the creativity and attacking. We are utilizing wing backs more this season as well which means the midfield sit even more.
It's difficult at prem level and in this system for those two in the midfield to stand out or dominate the opposition midfield. They are not being asked to do that.
If we can stay next season we will probably look to evolve with quality though and up the possession etc.
(As an example watch Nottingham Forrest. Their midfield basically never look 'good' or dictate. They leave it all to the forward boys to counter. | |
