David according to Pride of Anglia made 325 appearances for us, was club Captain and professionally played over 600 games with various clubs. Another non nonsense centre half. He was not as good as his brother but good enough to play in the first Premier League for three seasons for us, eight overall.
He was a solid player. Good in the tackle and in the air. He didn’t fiddle about getting the ball away. Hoof! Not one to be messed with either. So much so that I remember him flooring somebody with one of the best punches I’ve seen in a football field. It might have been the game linked below against Man City which is an interesting read if only for Dozzell sending a player to hospital and scoring the winner!

It was rumoured at the time that David enjoyed a beer before the game but I don’t know if that’s true. Didn’t stop him anyway. Oh how the game has changed.
Linighan was Captain of the 92 2nd Division winning side and our team in the inaugural Premier League. He rarely gets a mention, but he’s one of the better Centre Halves we’ve had during my time watching them and never let anybody down.

Hunter, Beattie, Butcher and Osman he wasn’t, but appearance totals under three different managers suggest he wasn’t the worst. I was lucky enough to see quite a number of his games - you knew what you were going to get with him.
Edit: yes, Gayle was a good player. Only made 58 appearances 90-91. Middle name Wilbert. Bet he never uses it! [Post edited 9 Jan 9:12]

I was only thinking about Linighan the other day and how he doesn't get the recognition he deserves as captain of the 92 champions. I got a delightful coffee mug for Christmas with various player / manager names laid out on a London tube style map, he's not even there. He was never fast but he lost a bit of sharpness after a serious injury (cruciate?) in Spring 1992. He wasn't really good enough for the Premier League as a result even in that early incarnation.
Burley playing a back four of him, an ill Wark, Yallop and Thompson at Old Trafford was never going to go well though.

He wasn't always a fan favourite exactly. There were loud cheers from the stands when he was substituted against Hull at PR towards the end of 1989/90. He didn't play again that season and looked to be on his way out. Not many would have been too bothered had he departed. But then Duncan was sacked and he was quickly rehabilitated under Lyall. |  | | |
