One of my biggest pet peeves is the cost of rail travel in this country. Just about anywhere in Europe its so so much more accessible, we seem a complete outlier with the ridiculous prices. Does nothing to discourage people away from their cars, myself included.
I always feel bad when I see young backpackers landing into Stansted for a city break knowing they'll probably be on the hook for more to get a 40 mile train trip into London than their flight cost them. |  | | |

Agree 100 per cent. Unfortunately train services I guess are used as a political football like most things but what I don't understand is this. Some people don't like flying and I get that, but it's hard to find anyone who doesn't like being on a train. But yet as you say we make it as hard and expensive as possible and it's frickin annoying. Imagine if you could get on a train in Bournemouth after the game last Wednesday night and go all the way to Ipswich non stop, wouldn't that be a challenge but unfortunately it'll never happen. | | | |

This government have committed to renationalising the franchises as they expire. You can bet your house it won’t materially reduce fares though! For me it costs £1 per mile to Ipswich on the train - that’s just offensive! [Post edited 9 Apr 2025 7:31]
