If you fancy a cheaper train on Sunday, £28 return Ipswich to Liv St (via a bus - Colchester to Billericay)

Still a rip off. You can go from Barcelona to Madrid from £15 and that’s nearly 400 miles. (Not so handy for Chelsea though).

Yep, train prices are ridiculous, gone through the roof.

Super off peak day return from Cambridge North to King's Cross is £24.30 if useful to anyone.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

One of my biggest pet peeves is the cost of rail travel in this country. Just about anywhere in Europe its so so much more accessible, we seem a complete outlier with the ridiculous prices. Does nothing to discourage people away from their cars, myself included.

I always feel bad when I see young backpackers landing into Stansted for a city break knowing they'll probably be on the hook for more to get a 40 mile train trip into London than their flight cost them.

What we need is a Labour government.

And that is a good line and (imo) not that badly priced for Britain.

Given it's a bus replacement service - shouldn't they be called Tortoise fares?

One that actually did what it put in it's manifesto would be good start.

Alternatively drive to Newbury Park, pay a pittance and get the tube, or drive to South Woodford where there is free on street parking and get the tube. Both probably cheaper than the train

Both in the ULEZ though.

I’m driving to Epping and tubing from there.

Agree 100 per cent. Unfortunately train services I guess are used as a political football like most things but what I don't understand is this. Some people don't like flying and I get that, but it's hard to find anyone who doesn't like being on a train. But yet as you say we make it as hard and expensive as possible and it's frickin annoying. Imagine if you could get on a train in Bournemouth after the game last Wednesday night and go all the way to Ipswich non stop, wouldn't that be a challenge but unfortunately it'll never happen.

Doing Newport on Saturday and staying in the Reading area to save coming all the way back to Ipswich and driving back the other way 12 hours later.

Will park somewhere in outer London and tube in.

This government have committed to renationalising the franchises as they expire. You can bet your house it won’t materially reduce fares though! For me it costs £1 per mile to Ipswich on the train - that’s just offensive!

Oh, and just to add to this, if there’s anyone who maybe is considering rail journeys around Europe (including UK) I highly recommend this website. It’s a phenomenally detailed labour of love, and you don’t get pestered with ads or any of that rubbish.
