Leyton Orient (H) FA Cup 1979 14:03 - May 23 with 732 viewsThe_Major

So, here's a question.

Just found this on YouTube, and apart from the fact it's very difficult to see what happens in the shade, there is one blatantly obvious question.

Why are we in the away kit?

I actually went to the game and haven’t the faintest idea. Went to the replay (2-0 to us) too and after the game a pub supporters from both clubs were happily drinking in got attacked pub loads of West Ham supporters?! Arm yourselves lads!

Strange tie all round.

Those were the days.

My only guess is that it was a request from TV that both clubs didn't wear dark shirts. Some people only had back & white sets then. I guess Orient only brought their normal kit, so we obliged by changing.

Wasn't it something to do with the kit man left the blue kit at the last away game?

There was a discussion about this a couple of years back and it used to happen quite often in the FA Cup back in the day. In the game against Peterborough in the early 60s we wore our red away kit at home as well.

FA Cup semi finals would also see BOTH teams were change colours if there was a clash.

Hence yellow/blue v White v West Ham in 75 (Us v Hammers was always considered a colour clash back in the day, not so much with Villa for some reason)

White/black v yellow/green v WBA in 78

White/black v Red/Black v City 1981

The old rules of the FA Cup were that in any round if there was a colour clash, then BOTH teams had to change to their second strip. This was a supposed attempt to even out the advantage of being drawn at home.

Orient are in their change kit as well. Their first choice at the time was white with red braces.

That's a good point. Didn't think of that.

Around this time, Luton would have worn white as a first choice, also Palace with the blue/red sash.

Think Bradford would've been white too and not the current stripes.
