Adult Night Classes/Activities Ipswich 20:58 - Jul 16 with 2542 views | Swailsey | Hello. In a bid to battle the depression that I’m terrified is going to destroy me, I’d like to get myself out of the house in the evenings - and join a club/something creative. I’ve had a look online but am struggling to find something that isn’t a hugely ad-sponsored list of university courses etc. Does anyone know of any sites which list activities in the Ipswich area? Strip-clubs and brothels don’t count. Thanks x

Also worth downloading the Meetup app as there are often a lot of groups that post their events on there, often free or for a small fee. [Post edited 16 Jul 21:09]

However it might help to share with the mind hive what interests you have? I know we discussed music over the past while, any other areas of interest or passions of yours? I say the above because only last night on another forum I "participate on" (see what I did there?) there was a discussion on what to do in retirement which is/can be a major step change in someones life. Anyways, I have always enjoyed giving back to my community whether that was from pro bono IT work or just using skills self learned like D.I.Y or Car maintenance. Just a thought around how much we all can give back from our experience even if we deny we have such skills. Otherwise, I'm sure there are a lot of night classes available across different interests, have you tried sending out a few emails to various 3rd level education places? Or indeed even something different like joining a Gym, Tennis, 5 a side etc places? | | | | Login to get fewer ads
Adult Night Classes/Activities Ipswich on 08:47 - Jul 17 with 1188 views | Swailsey | Hey all, thank you so much for your replies. I play music, but that’s often quite heavily loaded, so I can’t always do that to relax. I’m really interested in the creative side of things - I’m not too academic and never really enjoyed school. Social side too would be good - I have a good group of friends, but feel I sometimes ask too much of them - potentially meeting strangers for some superficial talking would be good. I’ll look at all your links today - thank you again.

I'm not local but wishing you well fella. (another vote for sport, for what it's worth and it should be easy to find).

I was going to suggest language classes which are interactive and (in my experience) can be fun but that may not suit you. Having said that, a beginner's class should not be too taxing. A more creative option would be something like art classes. On some of the evening classes I did in the past, people sometimes went off to the pub afterwards but that would depend on who takes part. I wish you all the best. [Post edited 17 Jul 9:12]

Adult Night Classes/Activities Ipswich on 09:12 - Jul 17 with 1082 views | bluester | I’ve just started archery, which is very meditative. I’ve found it’s 90 minutes a week I can just clear my mind of all my work stress. I’m in London but I know there are a few clubs around Ipswich as my mother used to be a member of one of them. As Dan said, D&D is also good and it’s usually easy enough to find somewhere to play.
Adult Night Classes/Activities Ipswich on 09:27 - Jul 17 with 1039 views | ghostofescobar | Hey Swailsey. Firstly, nice one for posting. We need more like you to open up and talk about these things. Obviously I don’t know you, so my suggestion may be wide of the mark and not suit you, but if you can hit the sweet spot of doing something for you that is also some kind of charitable/voluntary thing, it could be a huge help. Voluntary work can be so rewarding and is repeatedly noted as something that helps us humans to feel better about ourselves and the world around us. You may already do something voluntary, so apologies if you do. Hope you can find something that helps, whether it’s voluntary work or not - as long as it helps you that’s all that matters.

I am currently spending a couple of hours every day learning a new language and it's great for focusing your attention on something else, as well as generally opening up a whole new way of thinking.

Adult Night Classes/Activities Ipswich on 09:31 - Jul 17 with 1020 views | Bluish | I joined a local book group when I moved to Ipswich 20 odd years ago. I didn't really know anyone aside from workmates, but it was the nicest thing to do. We met in the pub once a month, and it was very relaxed and friendly. I stopped going when my kids were born. I can DM you the group as it looks like it's still going if you're interested in something like that? The other thing that I participate in are photowalks, which pop up all over the place. You don't need to have expensive camera equipment, and I've met some really nice people. Usually we end up in a pub at the end of the walk.
Adult Night Classes/Activities Ipswich on 09:38 - Jul 17 with 980 views | blueasfook | If you're musically inclined, thought about taking up learning an instrument? I took up guitar about 10 or so years ago. Love it. It's a great outlet and can be social too. You can go along to jam nights/open mic nights and meet other musicians.

I've always been quite active, team sports etc, and when I go through periods of not finding the time I really notice changes physically and mentally, concentration levels, all sorts. To that end I go to the gym a few times a week, I never loved gym and found it really boring to be honest, but I've got more in to it and enjoy going there now. Cycling, running, swimming, tennis, squash, 5-a-side, golf, anything really. Generally clubs are really welcoming of new members, so have you considered a local running club or such like? A good thing to do socially, physically, mentally and its free (other than some running trainers). I signed up to a beginner squash league not knowing anyone else in it, or where my level was really. After a while I found my level and enjoyed that a lot. While I'm no longer in the league as I can't commit to the schedule, there's a few I'm still in touch with and play against on a semi regular basis. TLDR: Physical activity for the W. I really recommend joining a club if you can.

Agree with this. I would wholeheartedly recommend boxing (or another martial art; I am sure they are all good) for this purpose.

Adult Night Classes/Activities Ipswich on 09:45 - Jul 17 with 923 views | BarcaBlue | I'm a long way from Ipswich now so can't help with anything too specific but how about volunteering or working with somebody like the Suffolk Wildlife Trust (hope that's right). Great stress free option out in the countryside. When I was going through a rough time a few years back working with nature was an excellent escape.

Not sure if if they still do evening classes. Also there are a few independent potters around who do beginners classes if you fancied a bit of throwing - good fun! All the best!

do you like running at all? I know that Chambo has set up a group called Harmonious, they are all abilities and its more about the social side of things (they also run a coffee shop every day in the Curve bar).. i know a number of people joined the group because they found themselves in your position... they have other activities other than running, and do mens mental wellbeing evenings (and ladies). if you are interested ping me a message and i will let you know how to go about getting in touch. Again you dont need to be a good runner, they have 3K beginners which is walk/run on a tuesday i believe.
Adult Night Classes/Activities Ipswich on 10:53 - Jul 17 with 618 views | suffolkpoker | i love sport but im getting older, which makes it tricky. I joined a table tennis club and then got roped into playing league TT. I done that for a couple of seasons (winter sport). If you enjoy getting beaten by old ladies and a kid in the same night... its great fun. I have also joined a badminton club and trained with them for a couple of seasons. I even got into the final of the club doubles tournament (it was handicapped but what a buzz!) My best bit of advice is to find a sport or game you used to love but dont play anymore and google clubs and training. Then go down and play and join in. All these types of clubs are super welcoming.
