Dull squad numbers questions... 09:36 - Aug 7 with 626 views | SouperJim | As I understand it, senior players are usually given their pick of squad number, but I've always wondered exactly how this all works. E.g. why wouldn't O'Shea, now captain, take the #4 shirt? Assuming it's just personal preference (which I don't really understand)? Or if O'Shea didn't want #4 why not Greaves? The other one is the keeper numbers, happy to see Palmer at #1 but it does make me wonder how that gets ironed out. Muric and Walton will both perhaps feel they have a rightful claim. Is this a bit of tricky man management, as it shows the gaffer's hand in terms of what the actual pecking order is, or am I overthinking things? Also wondering about that vacant #8, surprised someone like Taylor, Ogbene or even Jack Clarke haven't wanted it. [Post edited 7 Aug 9:39]

A loan is probably most likely, given that we would crystallise a huge loss on any sale (or even have to give him away and give him a bung given that others might not match his wages). I am something of a traditionalist on numbers & hate to see players wearing high numbers. A small matter, but why don't the league bring in a rule that your 25 man squad must be numbered 1-25?

To be fair to Muric, he has worn 49 at all his other clubs, as well as wearing it during pre-season for us last year ... clearly a number that means something to him and I was surprised he didn't keep it when the numbers were released last year.

My personal favourite was when Edgar Davids became player manager of Barnet, he awarded himself the squad number "1".

I imagine Cajuste will take 12 again, Akpom will take 29 (had his best goal-scoring season with that number) and any new centre mid - hopefully Hackney - will take 8.

La Liga have that rule of 1-25. Wouldn’t be a bad thing in England.

Also 1, 13 and 25 are reserved for keepers!

Thought Ashley Young would have taken 40 and Szmodics 8 as he had at Blackburn, agree the choice of the centre halfs seem odd
Dull squad numbers questions... on 11:34 - Aug 7 with 326 views | The_Major | So here's a question. What's the highest number we've had? I know Morsy had 55 in his first season because Fridge had 5, but I can't think of anything higher than that, unless it's someone who made a single appearance in the EFL Trophy? | | | | Login to get fewer ads

This, with bells and whistles on it. 5 & 6 as centre backs. The end.

Dull squad numbers questions... on 11:41 - Aug 7 with 276 views | vinceg | Those old enough to remember the 1982 World Cup will recall that England squad numbers were given out in alphabetical order. Hence Trevor Brooking wore 3 and Mick Mills 12. Only exceptions were Kevin Keegan who insisted on his number 7 (should've been 9) and keeper Ray Clemence was 1. I think the Argies started this in 1978 as they had midfielder Nolberto Alonso wearing 1 and keeper Filiol wearing 5

It led to the interesting situation where, in a few matches, we had the numbers 11, 22, 33, 44, and 55 all on the pitch at the same time.

I think Holland did it in 1974 World Cup when Jan Jongbloed wore 8.

At Crawley in the Tinpot Cup in 2020, we had: 57 - Levi Andoh 56 - Alain Viral 59 - Jack Manly (sub) 58 - Albie Armin (unused sub)
