Good game, good game yesterday 08:28 - Aug 18 with 1043 viewsthebooks

Two good, well-coached teams. Got our attacking thing going again in the second half.

Thought Leif was excellent in the second half, like his old self. Looks like he’s got a good partnership with Philogene already, with Leif playing narrower. Philogene will be deadly at this level, and even did a lot of winning the ball back.

I thought Azon looked off it in the first half, but early doors and better second. BJ is good, Clarke did some very nice runs from fairly deep and looked dangerous, carrying the ball well. They just need to work out how they’ll slot together.

Szmodics and Hirst make for a tough, never-stop-running partnership.

I mean, this is a very good team who will steamroller most teams once it’s settled and they work their patterns out.

Agree generally. Think we can see why McK rates philogene so highly and he seems like he'll be pretty important for the whole thing to work. As you say, lots of energy and pressing across that front line. Once we find that killer touch, we should be too good for a lot of teams in this league.

That said, CMs still not working. There's a lot of balance for Cajuste to fix! I can't tell if we've abandoned the old Morsy style pass from the GK or whether the two CMs weren't switched on enough.

Yes, my son and I were discussing that Morsy pass yesterday. A pattern thing, I think, although which of the two will take that role hard to say. Azon looks a good passer, but not quite up to pace yet. BJ plays wider than Tuanzebe did as well.

What I did like is that we went to passing it out at all costs from the start of the second half yesterday. We looked like running the risk of retreating into our shell like we did against Brum at the end of the first. That’s what got us going again (even though a couple of people around me were apoplectic over Palmer’s refusal to go long sometimes).

If we take yesterday in isolation, I thought Soton nullified that pattern of play from GK to CM to be honest.

They worked really really hard to press and stop that.

So, I am not sure we have abandoned it as opposed to not really being able to play it.

I was happy with a draw going into the game, they're probably a bit more settled than us currently with Fernandes and Dibling still playing

We haven't quite clicked yet and at least know where we stand with Hutch and Broady, we need to go out and find a striker and a winger to strengthen up that squad, the bench still looks light and needs some fire power

Ben Johnson defensively is naive at times but it isn't all disastrous either, whether he grows defensively remains to be seen but that's one of my concern with the team currently

The other is Clarke where I worry it is never going to quite happen with him, in the meantime, I think his best position is on the right where it makes his game a bit more straightforward out there, sometimes just whipping in a ball from the right keeps his mind clearer, less running into traffic unnecessarily

Taylor is doing his best centrally but isn't the long term answer in there, time will tell how Cajuste gets on next to Matasiwa who is growing into his role

Philogene looks a better fit for our system currently, defensively his tracking back and ability to win the ball higher up the field looks useful with our high press

Leif is going to get more chances to shoot and cause general mayhem if ends up in the 10 position more regularly, that's going to he interesting to see how that develops

Chappers and Szmodics aren't quite as sharp as you would like currently but hopefully they restore that confidence and start burying those shots they are getting. I assume Akpom probably comes into this role also so their games will need to be upped

Hirst puts in a sterling shift but desperately needs that pressure being taken off him with an alternative, I do wonder if we will consider a pacey option who can run the channels and make a general nuisance of themselves

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

Davis was great wasn't he. Premier quality, but glad he wants to improve more before he goes back there! As you say, starting to work nicely with Philogene and in a month's time that will be a deadly wing.

*Azon is the Spanish one we didn't sign, Azor is Matusiwa's first name, but I'm going with 'Matu' to avoid confusion, and it also sounds like the nickname of a future star in waiting.

Poor old Jack Taylor struggles with that passing out from the GK simple because of his body shape, Morsy had a low centre of gravity and a decetive drop of either shoulder so he could either pass or pivot turn and deal with unexpected bobbles of the ball. Tayls height just makes all that so much more difficult and miss touches often lead to loss of possession in dangerous areas.... its not his fault, he needs to be facing the opposition goal further up the pitch to be effective. Personally I think we are going to have to adapt the way we play because this team doesnt have quite the tools of the previous " band of brothers ".

It was. There was a lot of moaning on here yesterday myself included. Howeverr having seen the game back we played well. Some really good link up play. Matusiwa is brilliant at stopping an attack and breaking up play. Philogene close to being man of the match, he is stronger than he looks and quick as well.

Possible only weak link was Taylor who doesn't really seem to fit.

Taylor tried it, the first time he nearly lost it and got a lucky deflection off the striker, the 2nd time he tried it, he turned into the striker and lost the ball but nothing came of it, the third time it bobbled off his foot and went to greaves thankfully

a niche perspective

It was a much better performance in regards to our display against Birmingham City. Probably from a neutral point of view it made good viewing, there was enough to keep you interested. I thought the way we started that first 10-15mins was very impressive, the intensity was very good. Then we stopped doing it as effectively and Southampton started to get a foothold in the game and deserved their equaliser when it arrived. I thought the 2nd half we were the better team and controlled it, but didn't do quite enough to fully deserve the 3pts, a draw seemed about right for me.

The pressing for the first 10 to 15 minutes was excellent, I don't know whether it was a tactical choice to slow it down or just we couldn't that up all half

Agree with your points, it was an encouraging performance. Philogene's a baller, I've said it before and will say it again.

I think I'm a bit of a fan girl but I first became really aware of him at Cardiff as a mate of mine is a ST holder there, went along to watch a game with him and he was without question the best player on the pitch despite his young age. I've followed him subsequently and took a keen interest when he was at Hull, saw a fair bit of him for them and again he looked a cut above on just about every occasion, 12 goals and 6 assists in 32 for a side that finished outside the playoffs.

I really wanted him to join last summer and was gutted when he didn't and we ended up with Clarke. He went to Villa and made 11 appearances in half a season, mostly off the bench, but for a side pushing for the Champions league. He then joined a side here on its arse a bit in January really and himself suffered injuries. Now he's back he's a differential at this level who would walk in to any other team in the division. Fans need to back him, he's a confidence player but with the right support and when up to fitness all the evidence suggests he can be a massive player for us.
