I'm not condoning any of what he's alleged to have done. It's pretty clear, though, that the same national coverage would not be afforded to the trial of a white British man on similar charges. | |

I think the issue is that these kind of scumbags who harass young girls are ten a penny and while their behaviour as a group is totally unacceptable, this one appears to have gained particular attention due to his immigration status and is being used to justify the kind of xenophobic/racist views that over the last year has spurred multiple riots fulled by the far right. Of course I understand why we have legal aid. If found guilty, he should be on the first plane back home. A British man, colour not important when people are not trying to create something which isn't there, could obviously not be deported from his country of birth. | |

Thing is, no one expressed any genuine concerns for the alleged attacker. Texters and J2 expressed extremely sarcastic sympathy, but that's it.
Genuine concern for the attacker just doesn't exist anywhere in this thread and I haven't seen anywhere on this board. So where is this "greater concern for the alleged criminal than his victims"?
There will be a dozen equivalent cases to this one going through court you'll likely never hear about. The only reason you're hearing about this one is the protests. I agree it's a no win because you either amplify it beyond all other equivalent cases or you get accused of burying it.
If you want to judge the media. The fact is that the coverage of the protests make this court case newsworthy now. The problem is the media have massively over hyped some tiny protests beforehand. What other protest could arrange a couple of thousand people in half a dozen cities and get rolling press coverage? |  | | |

Having seen this is a "live" news report on the BBC online today, I might agree that there is some merit in the proposition that this case is getting a greater degree of coverage than an alleged offence of this type might ordinarily attract.
I make no comment on the allegation itself. That's obviously for the court to decide, but it does remain a fact this is seemingly more newsworthy than other similar cases (sadly) being heard today around the country.
People can make their own observations why that might be the case. |  |

I won't access the links out of principle, but it does seem that way doesn't it?
No one is blind to the issues surrounding migration or asylum but being an asylum seeker does seem to have disproportionately influenced the coverage of this story.
If he is guilty, his guilt shouldn't be enhanced by his ethnic background nor his asylum status in my opinion. | |
