Hull, an odd and intriguing team, especially last night. 12:53 - Mar 4 with 1573 viewshomer_123

Timewasting etc. aside.

There was a lot to like about Hull last night. I have to say - their approach worked very well on the whole. Their high block was interesting - no major press until our midfield picked up the ball with Matsi (what a goal) and Taylor both getting dispossessed in our third on a number of occasions and had Hull been better at using that turnover (which they have been this season), we could have been in a right pickle.

That said, some very good defending and recovery work by O'Shea, Matsi, Furlong et al - generally kept Hull at arms length.

What was so interesting was the change once they went a goal down. A much more aggressive and attacking Hull and they looked dangerous. McBurnie a real handful for O'Shea who generally marshalled well but even so, he managed to hold the ball up well and a few lovely flick ons for runners.

I wonder if the feeling from the fans is why they don't play like that a little more often?

A real jeckle and hyde team for me but an interesting one. Can see why they pick up results.

As an aside, in case anyone isn't clear about how you breakdown a block - one of the main points is to move the ball quickly. But you have to alter your tempo - slow to quick - just going at full pace doesn't work. Best example was Taylors chance, slowly moving the ball around until we pinged it one touch forward. See also the move (which was wonderful) for Clarke - that change of pace and intensity opens up teams.

I actually thought we did that quite well throughout on the whole, though more so in the second half.

If I have a gripe from last night - I'd like to see us try something different from a set piece...we had a lot of corners and free kicks but really didn't threaten, it was all very similar for me.

Other than that - a very good and satisfying win last night.

I thought they got into a lot of good positions first half on the break, but lacked the final ball or we were sharp with the tackles. Could see how they'd done well this year, looked hard to break down but threatening on the break.

Have no issue with their approach, we had to work hard to break it down and we did. As it was, they looked reasonably threatening after the goal so you can see how they have (xG forgiven) made it to where they are in the table.

Their gameplan was effective and i'm sure if we played them again today they would have exactly the same tactics. Town found a way though. McKenna knew they wouldn't come and play after what happened to Swansea. His team selection and subs planned for exactly what sort of game it was.

Truly impaired.

sometimes 1pt is as good as a win?

Are you sure about that?

Pretty much how I saw the match homer. A few sat around me, my son included, thought Hull were crap. I thought they executed their game plan pretty well for the most part and but for some wayward passing in the final third and some excellent defending from us could have been a little more uncomfortable. The last fifteen minutes were a bit squeaky bum but well played us for seeing it out.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

I thought their 27, Slater, had a really good game - he was always getting in the way and I would think that Azor has not had such an annoying opponent this year. I also thought Koumas and Miller were pretty lively outlets.

Weird fans, too. Seen about 7,000 tweets since last night from Hull fans saying us and Boro/Cov fans were rattled by little ol Hull. Erm, you are 5th and came to play like a non-league team. Weird definition of being rattled.

If they'd have played like that throughout we'd have ripped them apart. It was mainly the nerves that had us sitting back and allowing them further up the pitch. I mean as soon as they came out we missed an open goal also.

The consensus from where i was sitting is that they were awful and how on earth they are so high up in the league. Time wasting aside they just lacked any real threat. One of the worst teams I’d say to come to PR. Their goalie in particular with taking so long to take kicks, which ultimately didn’t work out well for them

I can't believe anyone's opinion could be any different for most of the game. Most, if not all, of their good chances (especially in the 1st half) came from our errors.

After we scored, they showed a bit more what their attacking was like, but I think that also came down to us seeming a bit nervous.

Yes they defended well but that's a lot easier if you lack any ambition. Definitely didn't look like a top 6 side

Frustrating to watch, sure, but they are extremely efficient at winning games away from home with that system (or at least a slightly dialled down version of it).

They were a good final ball away from being 1v1 on a couple of occasions, and limited us to very few big chances. You can 100% see why they do it when it turns the margins in their favour every week.

One of our major criticisms has been our inability to break these kinds of set-ups down, and I'd argue we've probably just won against the best example of it in the league right now. Our passing intensity is really starting to find a groove.

Indeed, and I don't think anyone was rattled yesterday at all - they played exactly like how most fans, let alone the team and McK, were expecting.

You're right about the corners and free kicks. Did we win a first header in the entire match?

There was some noise on here around McBurnie in the summer. I wasn’t sure at the time what condition he was in having not seen him play for years. Having seen him a few times now this season, I think we missed a trick not busting a gut to get him in. He’s very similar to Hirst in style but better imo. He’d flourish in our team.

Thats about understanding their aim, fans can sometimes dismiss anything that isnt 'exciting' or de rigueur (The tika take of Barca a few years ago, whatever Pep has Man City doing these days), sexy football as David Ginola once put it. Sometimes you have to play a different game, you cant expect to play some teams at their own game, they're better at it.

Teams that come with clear plan and execute it well are to be applauded and Hull showed they have 2 sides to their game and no doubt adjust to whom and where they are playing. Sighn of a good coach and a well coached team and fair play to them.

Not quite good enough last night though, because we've got super Kieran Mckenna

I know what you mean and I’ll begrudgingly acknowledge the effort, but not applaud their approach. I think being organised in a defensive block is the easiest part of the game (as the lesser teams can do it, as we’ve found out plenty of times). Obviously it takes a lot of practice on the training pitch and a lot of physical effort, but that’s it. There’s no footballing skill involved. They’revwell coached at it, but it’s easy coaching.

I don't think they were crap, but relative to their league position they're underwhelming, but they're not the first to come here and leave that impression. They more closely resembled a middling side and lacked a bit of ambition to me. A Preston-like performance, without the threat that they showed through Jebbison on the transition. Pragmatic, in the region of 200 passes completed, a highish % of passes attempted were long. Nothing about them really screamed playoffs, or what we've become accustomed to as playoff quality at this level.

McBurnie made a difference, but I wasn't surprised to see him on the bench having been flogged in recent weeks. They just don't have the depth beyond him and Gelhardt from an attacking perspective. Millar isn't particularly threatening, nor Koumas on that evidence. If they were 12th its a performance wouldn't bat an eyelid at, but if someone told you those 2 sides last night were level on points 75% of the way through the season you would wonder how or why.

We clearly have a fear factor about us and maybe Swansea showed what will happen to teams that come and try to play a bit, but I do think we can't be got at a little more than Hull achieved. There has to be a balance IMO. Oxford showed more invention than Hull.

They offered practically zero in the final 3rd, as their stat of no attempts on goal state, and apart from a couple of decent flicked on headers, OM did nothing ( apart from glare at the ref when he thought he should have had a fee kick! ). Well organised and disciplined at the back? Sure. Any attempt to win the game? Nope.

They looked like a peak McCarthy-era Ipswich to me.

I wonder if they play like that at home too?
