It all depends on how and when Southampton were expelled.
After letting the semi-final complete, to me, it seems Southampton were expelled at the final. Meaning no way back in for either of the losing semi-finalists.
The best way for Boro to have protected their claim was to hold up the leg they felt so disadvantaged in. Instead Boro played it, hoping to win but built a case for Southampton to be expelled if they lost it. Cake and eating it.
