You are hard to please. Three number 9s, a World Cup winner, Encisco, Fatawu, Maeda, Diop …

No other signings. on 16:03 - Sep 1 with 5417 views | TripSwitch | It's not ideal as we could really have done with a starting RB and Mcateer as back up to Fatawu isn't great either but on the other hand not getting Flemming would be a disaster so I guess if that's what happens its a bloody good transfer window and we've given ourselves a chance of staying up.

I think part of it is optics at this point. Imagine if Palacios was on the downlow and we announced him and Flemming today for £40m, people would be creaming themselves.

For me it's not even that - it's two-fold: GON spoke on Sunday about wanting to get two more deals done - so he's of the opinion that there's still room for necessary improvement within the squad. We're lacking PL-quality backup in at least two positions - LB and RM. If Davis or Fatawu catch a nasty case of knack, then their backups are going to be Greaves and McAteer respectively. Decent players, but definitly not PL quality in those two positions.

The incomings have been brilliant, but it is also squad allocation that is key. I think it is risky going with 3 of the 4 at the back from the last two years, Greaves has question marks and we are an injury away from major issues across the backline. In an ideal world you'd have probably wanted one of the CM signings to be a loan and 20M spent on another defender, but I guess it's not always as easy as all that.

Context is Sunday and getting ripped apart- 3/4 defenders from 2 years ago is not going to cut it.

Taylor I think would have gone to Birmingham but is a couple of weeks away from full fitness. Wonder if someone might still come in for Mehmeti late on, but has had the feeling that the only ones out would be Humphreys, Ogbene and Mendel.

This. Above all else we needed defence strengthening (and then goal-scorers), Diop is a great signing and Lukic too, but O'Shea is being played out of position, and in spite of all the excellent work done by the Recruitment Team it's a real worry that will be exposed if we pick up an injury or two. We won't be able to spend much money in January to fill those gaps.
| Flemming close to being agreed. No other signings. on 16:15 - Sep 1 with 4800 views | IP1Blue | I think not signing another CB does leave us quite short. Greaves has shown to be quite erratic last time we were in the prem and based off Sunday, them tendencies are still there. Also leaves us with only one spare CB if we wanted to play 5 at the back against the bigger teams so we are really cutting it fine if we get an injury or two. | | | |

I think this is the point. What we want (in terms of quality and position) and what we can get / is available are often rarely aligned. I don't think we can bemoan the overall incomings - some very good and astute business to be fair.

We are cutting it fine with Flemming and there is a risk of someone else coming in to hijack the deal. If we go forwards with Emersonn and Akpom, we are one injury away from being in big trouble notwithstanding the great business done elsewhere

It just doesn't tally with what MA has said about the owners pushing the club to go to the limits. Why aren't they questioning why we're not using the loan spots that would only require salaries covering? Surely we'd want to cover as many bases as possible...

I think it's a bit risky to not sign any other defenders than Diop though, For sure an international market there, as Sunderland proved last year and even Hull this summer to some extent. [Post edited 1 Sep 16:27]

I’m sure the club would like to push the financial side to its limits - but we also need players out the door to do that, so not really sure what else could be done other than having players sat there j registered and depreciating.

This. O'Neil said openly he was expecting two signings. We haven't supported this and there are gaps in the squad. What we have done is brilliant, but it's not quite enough. As someone else said, perhaps the lack of departures, such as Mehmeti and Taylor, have hurt us in this respect.

What potential targets were there? Who is actually better than the players we already have, or more experienced? Did their clubs want to let them go, or the players themselves want to go to Ipswich? It's all very well having some kid out of Chelsea's youth-hoarding programme, but will they actually be effective in the Prem? Enough to justify the expense? We are no longer in the situation that a Prem loan is guaranteed to be of superior quality to our existing squad.

Does that mean that we're robbing Peter to pay Paul a little when it comes to contracts etc.,? I appreciate that, to a degree, we need to pay what we need to pay in order to get good players through the door. But does that then jeopardise us a little further down the road, when players end up on decent contracts that they won't get elsewhere, and decide that they'd rather stay at PR and 'fight for their place', despite probably not ending up in the 25-man squad?
