Have you got anything about why most people believe everything their Government tells them and follow their guidelines without question even though they have a long history of telling lies to the public? I'd like to see the psychology on that one.

And anyone who thinks they've never ever believed a conspiracy theory should ask yourself why you ever believed any of the lies propagated by the SYP and their apologists? Years of not only believing that conspiracy but repeating it...even for some when the evidence was staring them in the face.
I have often said it was an "uncomfortable truth" and that very much ties in with "The desire for understanding and certainty" aspect she highlights. Who would want to believe that those nice policemen (Who we all trust to keep us safe) killed innocent people and then lied for years about it?
Anyhow - don't wish to open a can or worms, just a food for thought if/when you get too judgemental of others for believing a "dishonest crock of sh1t", you might just have done so yourself once...

If you're talking about why people follow the coronavirus guidelines, I'd say that it's because those guidelines are backed by a solid body of scientific evidence.

That assumes that they have no socialisation from parents, peers etc. before coming into contact with "the government". That they develop no critical thinking skills, or come into contact with a range of sources via the media and education before receiving direct input from "the government". Let alone that "the government" is a fixed entity with some sort of consistent staffing, approach and design.
Your comparison simply doesn't add up. The psychology of social consensus is fairly easy to observe and understand. The idea that conspiracy theorists are some equal but alternative form of intellectual powerhouses is just a contemporary twist on the religious cult.

When things get back to normal I recommend this one man show which blows open the dangerous world of conspiracy theories.
Cotty pointed me in his direction a while ago. He’s from your part of the world. I caught up with the show in Edinburgh last year.

I think you're starting with a false premise there, it's highly doubtful that most people believe everything their government tells them. Spend more than 5 minutes on this forum and you'll see that's not the case. People are more likely, though, to trust scientists and medical professionals.

Yes I take that point. I was being slightly facetious in my comment which probably didn't really come across.

Do you also post as ericclacton...?
No...it's just that I played the Moonlight Sonata appallingly when forced to have piano lessons as a youngster.
After about one million attempts, I'd more or less mastered (in the sense of getting to the end with relatively few mistakes) the first movement, and could have a passable stab at the second movement and it's tricky syncopations. Never even tried the third movement.

I've got a kid playing the 3rd mvt and it is indeed a nightmare.
