Some unfortunate incidents here 10:56 - Apr 22 with 1511 viewsStokieBlue

Some of this is simple incredible, it's hard to understand what goes through some peoples minds.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-52370352

Some highlights:

- 134mph in a 40mph zone in London
- Speeding offences doubled in Lincolnshire despite there being 70% less cars on the road

And this is where it gets more complicated as this seems to contradict the new guidelines in many instances:

"The concern we currently have relates to those undertaking unnecessary travel. A serious road collision can result in around 20 emergency services staff attending the scene,"

It does show that some people have still not got the message about stretched emergency services not needing any unnecessary accidents to attend. I would expect that magistrates will be less than sympathetic when these cases come before them and that this will be reflected in their sentencing.

But I couldn't help thinking when I saw this that at least we know where Fergal is, and perhaps why he has not been posting lately:

'A driver was stopped in Sudbury, Suffolk, travelling at 80mph in a 30mph limit with no insurance and no driving licence'

He does know how to get the most out of that moped...

Good work on the helping out the funding of TWTD by the way.

It is the same locally far more cars are speeding than previously due to lower traffic flows.

Lincolnshire one isn’t really a surprise - clear roads and conditions = people putting their foot down a bit more. I would hazard a guess the local forces may have specifically targeted speeding too

Also at the risk of starting a 10 pager if this is people travelling at say 80mph on a dual carriageway I’d question if it’s really that likely to cause an incident - but my assumption on the types of cases could be way out

Obviously the other example sighted and speeds in 3 figures anywhere are ridiculous

From cycling experience there are much less cars, but that tends to mean a higher percentage of covidiots are on the road. When you do encounter a car, more chance that it will be an irresponsible idiot, that isn’t restricted by other cars being in their way.

Lightweight stuff really - saw a report about someone doing 150mph on the bottom of the M1 a couple of weeks back. They had video footage of the police car chasing who was absolutely flying by cars in the middle lane like they were parked.

A few idiots yes, but it's also true that driving faster is far less risky given the huge decline in traffic on the roads.

These idiots need a good dose of corporal punishment. Followed by 5 years hard labour. That would soon deter these activities.

What are you talking about man? Doing 134 in a 40? What about pedestrians? You can be sure that these idiots are cr@p drivers who can only drive fast in a straight line and it's only a matter of time before thethey lose control.

Lock them up for a few years and give them thinking time to reflect on their activities behind the wheel.

Also, in Lincolnshire you can usually see the road ahead for several miles as it is so flat.

My theory is a bit different. I think the speeding is a combination of people who shouldn't be out knowing they shouldn't be out (majority) and therefore gunning it and the legit workers who fear a fine if they are stopped and their work is deemed non-essential (minority).

Truly impaired.

Less time to react, so more chance of hitting something that could have been avoided, concentrating less as theres an assumption theres less to worry about,so you not only dont react in time again, to other vehicles, (I'm seeing more cars pull out of junctions where previously theyd have stopped to check but are now assuming it's just clear) but the lack of traffic has meant theres more wildlife on the roads you need to be aware of and then the fundamental laws of physics means when you do crash, the higher the speed the bigger the impact, the worse the outcome

So no driving faster is not far less risky at all at anytime

Exactly this, people are taking more chances overtaking on the assumption theres no other traffic, when previously theyd have been held back

I agree. Five years of a Labour government is just what the country needs.

I did say there were a few idiots and yes, someone driving at 134mph anywhere, especially in a 40mph zone, comes into that category.
