Yep. He had been ever present up until then. His brother was in the squad also.

I would go with the 96 team as it was more creative/dynamic, when on its game, they were brilliant to watch. Was this the christmas tree formation? Cannot remember. Was at the Wembley games throughout the tournament and the demolition of the Netherlands is up there as one of the best England performance I have seen. If Gazza's legs had been an inch or two longer, then we would have been in the final.

We got lucky in 2018 and were so-so, despite getting to the semis. We were not one of the best four teams in the tournament.

1990 - we laboured through the group stages, got lucky in the knock-outs, especially against Belgium, but so should have won the semi.

That tournament was incredible. Probably the first time I realised I was hopelessly in love with football as a 7 year old.

Out of the options I'll go with the 96 team and your assessment..

90 & 96 we could have won the semi final, 18 we should have won the semi even though overall I think that team inferior to their predecessors.

I still believe we'd have done better at 98 if kebabgate hadn't caused Hoddle to ditch Gazza.

50/50 between 96 and 90. Both are far superior ro 2018.

96 had a far better keeper but 90 had Waddle and Gascoigne in his prime.

Lineker 90 was less than Shearer 96. Beardsley/Sheringham another close call.

England 98 was a better side than both.

For me, the ‘96 side had the best balance and played some great stuff under Venables. Although the 90 side was managed by BR, we got very fortunate in games and probably had the key moments go in our favour. How we won that QF against Cameroon I really don’t know? We were second best by a distance. I’ve got fond memories of Italia 90, but it was a slog for us at times, which I think is forgotten due to us pushing the best side in the world at that time, Germany all the way in the semi final. With Southgate’s England side, although it’s the most recent, there’s not too many games that were that memorable and we lost 3 games in the whole of that competition, losing to Belgium twice. I still don’t believe we were the 4th best side in that tournament and got fortunate with the draw.
