Best 'smokey' whiskeys? 08:12 - Sep 10 with 2426 views | BrixtonBlue | Came across an excellent selection of whiskeys in a shop up here in the Lake District and thought one would be a good idea for my dad's birthday at the end of the month (likely to be cheaper than back in London as well I'd have thought). He likes the smokey ones. Any faves?

It’s like drinking barbecue sauce - very sweet and absolutely delicious. Usually about £50 per bottle. If he likes peat, I can make some recommendations too.

Lagavulin 16 years old for me, too. Many smoky and peaty whiskies have a harshness to them. Lagavulin 16yo manages to be both smokier than most and smoother and less harsh. For reference; usually over 50 quid for 70cl full sized bottle in shops. Just under on Amazon at the moment. Also available as a 20cl for half that, depending on your budget.

To be fair to Keno, it's the only technically correct answer, as you wrote "whiskey", of which Southern Comfort is an example, rather than "whisky" of which Lagavulin is a fine representative.
Best 'smokey' whiskeys? on 10:02 - Sep 10 with 2286 views | Pinewoodblue | When seeking advice on a purchase it is a good idea to give an indication on how much you want to spend. Did anything catch your eye in the excellent selection you saw? If it is a specialist shop no harm in seeking advice from the vendor, tell him what you think is your Dad’s favourite and how much you want to spend and they will sort it for you. They will know if they get it right you will buy again on a later visit.

Well I didn't know whether I wanted a whiskey or a whisky to be honest, so picked one at random.

To be honest it was a Booths supermarket, which I appreciate is a chain oop North. Certainly, in a specialist shop I'd be asking the vendor for his advice.

A few years ago I got a call from a mate. He was up working in Cumbria and was in Booths and he'd found a bottle of Bushmills 16 year old at £30 and should he get it. Very unusual to get that in a retail outlet, never mind Booths, as it's very limited production. They must have got a one off and thought it was the 10 year old and marked it wrong as it goes for £80. Bloody lovely it was too...

Brought a bottle of this in Booths 2-3 years ago marked down from £80 to £40 Aberlour A'Bunadh It was cask strength 50+% if I remember right. Any Aberlour will do though.

Aberlour 12 and 16 are both lovely. I've not tasted A'Bunadh, yet. I'd sum up the classic Aberlour flavour profile across those two as "All the best bits of Christmas cake (minus the icing and marzipan) and Christmas pudding in a glass". I also love Dalwhinnie 15yo which is kind of salted fudge and a touch of honey with whisps of heather. Lagavulin is "memories of the best fire on a beach you ever sat next to". I remember when Jilly Goolden was mocked nationally for saying, correctly, that a wine had notes of fresh cut grass. Or when eating pesto was seen as pretentious. Now here I am giving verbose whisky tasting notes on a football forum. Appreciation of good food and drink has moved on massively in the past 30 years.

I agree - you can get some great whisky bargains in Lidl and Aldi. They buy up stock from distilleries and slap their own label on it so as not to devalue the distillery brand. They do good aged specials as well - I’ve got a 34yo blended malt which only cost £50, plus an Islay 22yo single malt for £40, among others.

Not heretical at all. Decent whisky is decent whisky. But whilst I wouldn't mind drinking it myself, I'm not sure I'd give it as a present. Which is weird when you think about it!
