Last post for a while 07:57 - Sep 4 with 15765 views | bluelagos | Off tomorrow to Penzance to start Sunday morninng on a 1250 mile ride from Lands End to O'Groats. After gettng to Bath we cross the Welsh border before skirting the Peak district on up through Cumbria before skirting the weat coast of Scotland via Oban, Ullapool and finally JoG. So far have managed 3950 miles training, longest ride 72 miles, most challenging ascent 3000 ft in 30 miles. The longest day will be 82 miles, the biggest ascent 9000 ft the day we ride to Skipton 3 crashes so fsr, only 1 at speed, the other two unclipping fails. Attacked yesterday by a wasp that got inside my mouth and left me looking like the Elephant man for a few hours. (Pic on the link) Paying for the trip but seemed silly not to raise a few quid for a good cause too. Chose an Ipswich based foodbank that I know help the most needy, when they need it. https://localgiving.org/fundraising/Nick-cycling-LEJOG-FIND/?fbclid=IwAR2ljCDt6V https://www.findipswich.org.uk/ Thanks to all who have already thrown in a few quid and any more gratefuly received. Spoke to a Capel based cyclist who did it 2 weeks ago. He said Cornwall is mentally tough as the hills are so steep. And if I have to, I'll push. He descibed the Grampians, how he saw a huge rise in front of him, head down he got there and stopped in elation having cracked the hardest climb he'd ever do. Then leader then quips, that's only the starter, got 2 more of them. West coast of Scotland seems way more civilised tbh.

Think there's 16. The guy who I met from Capel - he was on a 10 dayer (100 a day) and told me a 14 day ride was cancelled as one of the guests went down with suspected CV on the morning. They couldn't set off knowing it might have spread between the group. Turned out it wasn't CV and a load of them had their trip cancelled cos a bloke had a cough. So if I develop a cough on the way down...nah, come this far :-) [Post edited 4 Sep 2020 9:36]

I've cycled a lot of the Scotland and Lakes area routes you will follow, you're in for a treat. Are you going through the Galloway Forest? or skirting east of there... that's special.

I'm sure you'll be fine - plenty of fresh air! How come you going the uphill way and not from the Scot's land down to Cornwall? 16? Hive mentality then huh?* *sorry.

Just looked, we cycle Dumfries to Ayr on Day 11 via Loch Doon then onto Arran that afternoon. Think that's our longest day. If I miss the last ferry...boll0cksed!

Most people go LeJoG not JogLE cos of the prevailing winds. Westerlies, you want them on your back not your face. Sunday's forecast has wind from the North but hopefully will resort to normal soon afterwards. Also, get the Cornish hills out the way asap.

Decided I might do a couple of stages next year. The flat ones look doable to a half fit novice. Mount Ventoux might have to wait :-)

I have a client who is very much into cycling, is very fit and did a mountain stage of the tour a couple of years ago His comment after was "it nearly killed me, took me 4 as long as the tour guys and how or why the hell do they manage to sprint the last bit"

I always find a ferry and train time puts some urgency into the legs!!! You're in for a treat Is there a route map anywhere? We once cycled Newcastle to Edinburgh, got very excited on the beers on the train up north, woke up jaded in Newcastle - set off along the Tyne, it was raining but relatively still (sheltered in the river basin), manageable, got to Tynemouth turned left (North) up the coast, into a 30-40mph headwind, torrential rain, 100 miles... we were absolutely broken The sun shall shine on your endeavours though! best of luck

I have GPXs - that's it. And a route card with turn by turn instructions. I'll just follow my mate as he has one of those cycling Garmins for the GPXs. If I get lost, cycle away from the sun, as that is always south in the northern hemisphere :-) The overnights are Falmouth, Bude, Minehead, Bath, Haye on Wye, Oswestry, Buxton, Skipton, Windermere, Dumfries, Arran. Oban, Mallaig, Tongue and Inverness.

I've motorbiked Mount Ventoux a couple of times and that is hard enough, the winds near the top are mental!
