Labour calling for all arrivals to quarantine in hotels 14:53 - Feb 11 with 2711 views | StokieBlue | Based on the idea that we don't know exactly where the Brazilian and SA variants are and that as it stands 29 of the 41 countries where the SA variant has been found aren't on the red list. They are estimating that up to 10,000 people per day are arriving from countries where the variant has been found but are not isolating in hotels. That is quite a lot more draconian than the current and even implied Tory policies on entry (which caused a debate yesterday) and would almost certainly mean no holidays for quite some time as not many people are going to pay 1750 per head to quarantine upon return. The policy is only there until holidays are legally allowed again. It is safe to assume, once we are allowed to travel this is no longer a policy

That's interesting. The variants of the virus don't stop existing just because people in the UK are allowed to travel. Surely if it's an issue now then it's an issue then as well? Weren't they planning to have the hotel quarantine until September? That would indicate no travel until September otherwise the two things seem out of alignment? Obviously it's fair to say that if full scale travel is allowed we can't quarantine that many people anyway. SB

Do you not think it makes sense for people coming in to the country to quarantine until it's determined they are clear? I'd have thought that would be an obvious thing that should have been implemented a long time ago. Australia have been doing this for months and it's been effective for obvious reasons.

That is exactly the timeline being considered/managed. No non-essential foreign travel (in or out) until September. This policy and that timeline are in-sync.

Making travellers pay £1750 for a 10 day incarceration is a means of stopping 99% of people from travelling without actually banning it as they won't want to do the incarceration and pay a huge sum for it.

Exactly. Each time a common sense answer is introduced there is push back. How hard can it be to see if we'd all complied with strict regulations in the first place we would be much further down the line. It's not difficult.

The only thing I would say is that sounds steep. I agree with the method, but the pricing seems off.

Out of interest, do you know the numbers of "essential" travellers coming into the UK daily? Labour cited 10000+ from places not on the quarantine list so that doesn't include those in hotels. SB

Give over you massive fanny. If we'd been doing this over the past 12 months, we might not be on our third lockdown now.

There are 20,000 passengers arriving by air every day. The data i've seen suggests Labour's data is somewhat off.

I thought the routine was the Tories will now make a big song and dance about how Labour want to close the country, before doing exactly what has been suggested about 2 weeks later?
