Just noticed, for all the trumpeting of the Cowleys and their new manager bounce 07:57 - May 19 with 4083 viewsThe_Flashing_Smile

(that Cook didn't get), they only finished one place and 3 points above us.

Wasn't that much of a bounce then. Or was it followed by a slump, given we had no bounce at all?

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Mini bounce followed by slump I think. We did a big slump with a mini bounce at the end.

Big season for the Cowley's ahead given their perceived failings at Huddersfield and inability to make the play-offs. I'm fairly confident time will prove Cook was the right option.

The bounce was a four game one against weak opposition. In fact, they had a decent looking run in but made an utter dogs of it. It was Jackett’s team so the test for Danny Cowley will be next season.

I was hoping for the Cowley's when Lambert left, with Cook a close second, I'm quite surprised how far they fell after their initial 4 game winning streak, especially given that they had nowhere near the turmoil we did.

I think it just goes to show it's not as easy as people think coming in mid way through a season with a team on low morale.

Mick also struggled after a bounce.

Tuchel and Moore obviously have done well.

A bit like the "Manager of the Month Curse", the "New Manager Bounce" may be something based more upon perceptions than reality. Would be interesting to do a statistical analysis to see how much of an effect there really is - and whether it is dependent upon when in the season the change happens, particularly with reference to the January transfer window.

Had a decent run in but made an utter dogs of it... sounds familiar.

I wouldn't be surprised if the "New manager bounce" essentially meant winning the following game rather than a complete turnaround.

Would be interested to see the stats though.

They are okay League One managers, people seem to think they are amazing due to that one cup win they had against us with Lincoln when we barely showed up to the game and they won.

Cheers Dan, what was interesting was this line "On average results improve for the first six games after dismissing a manager, after which, results taper off and return to levels recorded nine games before the sacking"

Which confirms my thoughts, that it is essentially a brief turnaround.

Yeah I'd have thought the same, especially without a transfer window.

Which would make us something of an outlier.

I know their initial contract was until the end of the season so are they definitely going to be at Portsmouth next season?

Just out of curiosity i'm not sure what you mean by failings at Huddersfield? They were bottom when they took over and were then sacked after keeping them up, in 17th I think.

Cowley and Cook were always my top 2 picks so should be a good battle next season.

That and Portsmouth having a better team to start with. In the three league games since Dec 19 they’ve beaten us pretty easily.

Not in doubt, in my mind. We’ve 100% the right man.

So the key to success is to sack the manager every 6 games?

The Cowley's came in off the back of 4 points in 8 games and won 4 on the bounce - the fact that they went into last game of season in the driving seat was down to that run they put together - but couldn't get over the line which was a blow for them.

When they came in we were 2 points ahead of them and ended 3 behind

There is a belief from some that if a manager can't even get you a new manager bounce then you are in trouble....!

Our bounce came when there was nothing left to play for. Portsmouth went into the final game of the season in the top six and got beat.

When was the last time that our season wasn't over by Easter? I'd love a bit of last day drama.

Hey now, hey now, don't dream it's over
