Pogba and Ronaldo 23:23 - Jun 17 with 1400 viewsjeera

I'd completely missed this and saw a reference or two in a thread today and wondered what it was about.

Good for them for refusing to endorse products they don't believe in.

UEFA 'warns' teams could be fined for not co operating with these sponsors. Bollox, they shouldn't be compromised like that in the first place. Cheap and classless tactics.

I'm sure this has been done, but I can't be bothered to trawl through.

Edit, in case I'm not the only person alive to have missed this:

It’s almost as if sponsorship is a very new thing to football.

I’m sure if Coke offered him millions to endorse their products he probably would. I’m not really criticising him but hard cash, for most people, may will see his values compromised.

I didn’t realise that the beer that was removed by Progba was non-alcoholic- not sure how this rests with tea totalers in general.

I'd say accepting the offer of any sponsorship deal on agreed terms is a million miles away from having a bottle stuck in front of you like that though Matt.

It's a real insult and like I say, cheapens the player. He's there to give an interview not to be treated like a lapdog.

Nearly all press conferences have products from their sponsors in front of players etc - it’s highly lucrative source of revenue for the organisers. Was the water he drank from branded as well?

Think most players don’t give it a second glance simply because they are so used to product placement.

From that picture on the link, it looks like it is a non-alcoholic Heineken!

Come off it.

Footballers are very happy to be treated like lapdogs and are paid handsomely for it. This is simply a gimmick.

Come off it? Righto.

I'm sure that's an appropriate response.

I disagree, and can fully see why some like Pogba being opposed to alcohol might be irritated that a beer product has been placed there. I didn't know it was non-alcoholic but that won't matter, they, the company, are known for producing alcohol. This isn't hard to take on board really.

As for this: "Footballers are very happy to be treated like lapdogs". Yes, because footballers are all one person.

"However, he said he understood the actions of players who, like Pogba, did such things for religious reasons."

I find it interesting that they deem it okay for a product to be removed for a religious reason, but not a scientific or ethical one.

It is either okay to enforce your moral standards upon people/players, or it isn't. But to discriminate against people's morals (eg, religious having more worth than non-religious) is unacceptable.

For the record, this is not an issue against the protection or religious morality, it is an issue against the lack of protection for non-religious morality.

Things being sponsored is a bit different to the actual product being plonked in front of you. Pogba's accepting that award because it's an award for how he played, it doesn't mean he's endorsing the sponsor of it and anyone with half a brain can see that. When Budweiser sponsored the FA Cup I doubt there were many players who refused a winners medal because of it.

Sponsors have branding boards behind players and managers when they speak, I don't know why they have to have a product in front of them as well. I agree with Jeera, it's tacky, classless and cheapens the player.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Players get well paid for these tournaments - they don’t do it for free. This money comes via TV contracts and sponsorship deals. If they are that principled they can afford to donate their pay and bonuses to charity, or if they feel that strongly not even take part.

Footballers and the public in general are in my opinion much more sophisticated in their understanding of advertising, media and symbols; and this is a product of that imo.

Clear difference in implication between a bottle in front of you on a table and advertising boards behind you or around the pitch.

The bottle in situ as it is says 'this is my product, I might consume it - potentially right now' - much more personal an association than regular adverts, and they understand that.

Telling that two of the most famous and influential (=powerful) players decided to exert this level of control over their image.

Uppie as you’ve changed my mind on this. I had laughed at Pogba’s hypocrisy (Ronaldo’s not so much as obviously a long time ago) however you’re right - being sat there with the bottle in front of them gives the impression they’re consuming the product rather than just being a generic sponsor ad

They know their respective FAs won't take any action, as the players can then say 'I'm no longer available for selection'.*

I hear that John McGinn raised a laugh in his presser when he asked "Nea Coke" as there was only a bottle of water in front of him.
