Are our trees, hedges, shrubs, meadows, lawns and flowering plants on steroids this summer?

In nearly 45 years working in the horticultural world, i've never known the almost triffid like growth on the counties plant life. I'm knackered with all this extra mowing and hedge cutting.

What's it like in other parts of the country fellow horticulturalists.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

Was out on a 12 miler yesterday and came up a path from the Stour towards Holbrook. Fair to say there was an awful lot of growth coming at you from all directions yesterday. It's defo gone a bit mental the past few weeks!

The growth in central London has been similarly rapid, must be the combination of warm weather + a lot of rain.

Think you've hit the nail on the head.

As bankster said further up, it's a good year for the roses.........and the herbaceous borders are flowering like i've never seen before.

The clamour for mine, and other gardening friends assistance this last month has gone through the roof, having previously been about 25% down during the pandemic.

Talking of rare birds, i had rarely seen sparrows living in Ipswich. Since we moved out into the sticks in March, we have a colony living in our front hedge who would appear to be permanent residents.

Tell me about it. I'm sure I only blinked and my garden has gone absolutely mad. Hoping to get out there tonight & this weekend and make a dent. I don't mind cutting grass, trimming hedges and chopping stuff, but I just can't deal with weeding, I don't have the patience.

Good man.
Every little helps.
Been satisfying to see a meadow I sowed(quarter of an acre) five years ago really showing its full potential this summer. Not my meadow unfortunately. Half left to naturalise, the rest regularly cut.

Bees and insects everywhere.

Yes, by walking the same routes regularly the change has been really noticeable. Could see into the zoo from Regent's Park one week and then the next the monkeys were hidden.

The small park opposite my flat has at least one bench that looks to be in the midst of the surrounding hedge now rather than in front of it.

If your topsoil had fertiliser put on before the turf was laid, I personally wouldn’t feed it again until the autumn. Then would be a good time to put on a feed low in nitrogen and high in root building elements to prepare your lawn for winter.
As for a cut, a high cut, about 5 to 6 centimetres should be ok but check the roots have started to develop by peeling back the corner of a turf and be careful using a powerful rotary mower as this can damage the lawn in the early stages.

My new gaff has a veg patch and loads of various flowers, trees and so on. None my doing, of course, but it's been great to see it all bloom over the last little while and to watch the various creepy crawlies and bees, especially, go about their business.

Who has time for a manicured lawn or concrete yard? Let mother nature do her thang and save the bees!

Couldn't be more different here in N. Yorks, has been difficult to get any veg growing in what amount to drought conditions - only a few mm useful rain in the past 5 weeks.

Not that that has stopped the couch grass or nettles much!

First properly "flaming June" that I can recall in the last 30 years here.

Well posting that was a right old rain-dance - just finished watering the veg, & we've now got a completely unforecast shower that's wet enough to stop me mowing the lawn, which I'd been just about to do!
