Just reading this awful story, and coupled with the incredible temperatures in the USA and Canada, plus what seems an increasing stream of similar stories around the globe, and made me wonder if humanity has sat on its hands for too long? Are we, to use a technical term, fooked?
No, but at this point we need a much more drastic shift than if we'd have listened in the past decades about slowly solving the issue.
Now we all need to make multiple sacrifices to stop going beyond the point of no return. It's not like we're all going to die but it's going to cause absolute chaos and cost more money in the long run than fixing the problem would have in the first place.
Well, 30 years ago would have been a better time to start worrying than now, but now is going to be better than acting in 30 years time.
I think there’s plenty of positive impact happening now, obviously nowhere near enough but it should be clear now that climate patterns are changing dramatically all over the globe. Whether people care enough to start making real sacrifices is another issue of course.

Throw in pollution, microplastics, water quality, pesticides etc and the answer is a resounding yes.
On the pollution and waste front - the last 18 months or so have been a disaster. We had gradually been moving away from disposable culture, but covid-19 and the response has seen a massive resurgence of it, albeit understandably.
I was born underwater, I dried out in the sun.
I started humping volcanoes baby, when I was too young.
Probably too late unless you can get a worldwide cohesive effort. China still accounts for almost a third of all CO2 emissions alone. Per capita North America is even worse.
It's not too late to the point we will head into the end of humanity - but it is too late for the planet to heal itself without serious changes and environmentalism put before capitalism
It's already too late to stop some major changes to the Earth's climate. As many have said there will need to be sacrifices made by everyone but that's hard for many people to accept and even harder if you're one of the billions striving to reach anything like the levels of comfort enjoyed in the major economies and the West.
Making sacrifices wouldn't even be enough now, there needs to be an active and substantial push to remove existing carbon from the atmosphere because the Earth's natural systems aren't always able to do it anymore:
It's going to need both natural and technological solutions to remove that carbon and to eliminate fossil fuel usage in a timescale that going to make any difference.
It is unlikely however that the will exists within enough of the global populace to actually do what would be required.

Interesting little thread here picked up off George Monbiot’s Twitter about how most people don’t understand how much change will be needed to make a difference (and why climate is only part of the story).

"In 2020, a federal judge ruled that the Dakota Access Pipeline was built illegally due to lacking environmental reviews, but the government still allows DAPL to continue operations as the ruling is appealed. The Biden administration has continued the Trump-era position of arguing in favor of allowing the pipeline to continue to transport oil.
With federal support for the Dakota Access Pipeline stretching through the Trump and Biden administrations, the U.S. government has taken a bipartisan position to tolerate oil industry actors harming the climate, while bringing the full force of the law against those who take direct action to oppose them."

just back to the nitty gritty of the Germany / Belgium story, they're now reporting 1300 people missing. A figure that really brings home the scale of this disaster, but possibly a fraction of what's to come in later events.
Has anyone ever looked at their own postings for last day or so? Oh my... so sorry. Was Ullaa

Where did you see that, I had thought there was in the region of 40 or 50 more people unaccounted for.

Well if people need any more proof then they will never get it until it’s too late. The pandemic should be a good yardstick to encourage us to travel less frequently and (this is the elephant in the room) work more remotely. Unfortunately the move to Electrification will be costly and the majority of people will be priced out of this.

Go and read up on the capitalist oil industry's funding of the denialists.
It's got zero to do with ignorance.
"It's not us, we never knew"
FFS. Pathetic.
Perhaps I should have used the term “wilful ignorance”. I.e mankind is/was well aware of the impact... but chose to ignore.
That said, one of the most enthusiastic destroyers of the planet, China are hardly raging free-marketeers, so I’m not sure how you can point the finger soley at capitalism?

Problem with working remotely is the digital nomad has been created. Plenty of people are travelling the world while working on their pc.

I think.there's quite a bit of.ignorance, deliberate or otherwise, about what China is like these days.
Communist it is not.

You'd have to say there's an extremely high probability that it is too late for a lot of species, for a lot of habitats, and even for a lot of humans.
There's little doubt in my mind that the ramifications of what we have done and what we continue to do, are going to make previous troubles like world wars and global pandemics look absolutely trivial.
If you are still a climate change denier, or if you think it won't affect you and you family that much, please think again. Don't be trapped with a conviction which you may have come to years ago before the evidence was so overwhelming.
It may look hopeless, but every little positive action adds up and will help to mitigate the disaster a little. So don't buy that big, shiny 4WD you don't need; eat less meat and dairy, or none at all; treat every flight you make as something you have to a lot to make up for, or don't fly at all; and don't have more than two children!
