The Sue Gray whitewash is coming 08:18 - Jan 28 with 6220 viewsElderGrizzly

The report will literally be blank

It's annoying now, he needed to be gone last week on the back of a scathing report.

What's the point of the report if it can't detail the most important breaches.

The Met have screwed this up, they should have been investigating before the report was even started.

Put very well here

And you can bet Johnson or his sycophants will use it as a defence of no wrong doing

This was always going to be too big to sweep under the carpet by just one person. Good of the Met to help out.

People not paying attention might accept that Tory narrative as well.

As I said, the Met look rubbish here and it's far from the first time.

Presumably they'll be starting their investigation by speaking to the officers who were running security?

Who of course were asked to investigate 2 months ago, but refused.

But happened to ‘find’ enough evidence 2 days before publication was due.

They did in the US with the Trump/Mueller report of course.

Claim vindication, when the report effectively said he was guilty

Me thinks this is the point to what is currently happening...sadly.

This reply seems the most likely scenario at this point:

However, with the majority of the public sceptical of Johnson now then I'm not sure it will make the issue go away. Johnson still has no authority, it's still a matter of when he goes now I think.

I think the public/media rage if they tried a stunt like that would be deafening. Far too obvious.

Also, too many people have already nailed their colours to the mast, they're not just going to meekly walk away. Bear in mind there are local elections coming up in May.

In addition, do the Met want to shred what little is left of their public credibility on the altar of a PM who is likely to fall into another crisis any moment and is happy to throw allies under the bus in order to save his own skin?

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

But if you believe that then you surely have to believe that the Met are implicitly trying to help the PM which is another quite large step.

Tho the implication is exactly the opposite. Anything 'minimally referred to' in the Gray Report can thus be taken as serious enough for a criminal enquiry.

The *only* defence of the Met approach here according to a QC is they have uncovered something that will require a jury trial rather than just a fine.

Even then it is a stretch apparently.

Investigate Fred West, just don't mention the patios...

Yes, that is one theory according to a QC I mentioned above/below too.

Still a stretch apparently.

The timing of course is the main issue from a police force who were asked to look at the very same evidence 2 months ago

There are increasingly fewer of them. A number of people I have spoken to who would normally be staunch, or at least habitual, Conservatives are now expressing dislike of Johnson or disgust at his antics.

In all fairness, they were working off evidence obtained in 2016 that suggests 52% of them will fall for any old con.

If you didn't see this coming over the past few days you're blind.

It was always going to play out like this

- Johnson knows the report is bad news for him
- He knows if he doesn't publish it fully people will cry cover up so needs an excuse.
- Someone may have decided that it might be beneficial that the police are involved.
- The Gray report will now be published, redacted with excuse it's to avoid prejudice
- Johnson will then pivot that it's for the police to determine what happened
- The police who have a higher burden of proof, will then investigate
- Because of the higher burden of proof, it will be much less damaging for Johnson
- Johnson will then present himself as being somewhat vindicated by the police report
- The scathing Gray report that was a danger to him, will never be fully published.

The fact the Met come out with this at the moment having said the opposite the week ago and avoided investigating this suggests that either the Met are completely incompetent or something else has made them suddenly change their mind.

The UK deserves better than this, what will now turn out to be a sham.
