They've been shelling a nuclear plant? on 08:47 - Mar 4 with 1913 views | ElephantintheRoom | Not just any nuclear power plant - Europe’s biggest Mind you it would take a lot more than a few artillery shells to start a meltdown, even if they were hitting the power station, not a nearby office block. A sobering dose of reality though to those who think this is just a bunch of Slavs killing each other and a PR opportunity for failed western politicians

Tbh, I half thought I'd wake up to the worst sort of news. As you say, this one really brought it home.

I gather the fire is out now and theRussians have taken the plant so it should be safe. I’m not sure even reducing the plant to rubble would create a nuclear disaster. Don’t these things have to blow inside out (Chernobyl and Fukijima) to do that? I’ve no idea, but this surely brings it home that this war may not be containable.

I think there's some debate about whether this one could blow, being a pwr (whatever that means), yes. Anyway, glad it's safe for now. I wonder if the US / Russian holiness was buzzing hot overnight?

True but even firing one artillery shell is dangerous and could in a worst case start a chain reaction that ends in disaster. They won't deliberately destroy them and China has also this morning urged all sides to ensure safety of Ukraine nuclear facilities which will put pressure on Russia and hopefully prevent them trying anything as stupid again with the other Ukrainian nuclear power stations.

Isn’t the issue more that all it takes is taking out the power supply. Power is needed to keep the fuel reactors cool. No power and then you have a cooling issue and potential meltdown. That was the issue at Fukushima. So any activity that can potentially take out power and any back up is a serious issue

I swear some people are itching for us to get involved. Scare stories like this (often for clicks) aren’t going to help.

Yes, western media outlets parroting government propaganda without any fact checking or analysis is a common theme these past few years and has been no different during this war. I can understand why Ukraine would want to maximise fear to get more involvement from the west, but the media really should be far more responsible.

This thread from a nuclear power expert should be more reassuring. No doubt, the Russians have increased risk and psychologically it’s pretty revolting to spread that nuclear fear however overblown, but looks much more like they’re trying to force the nuclear plants to shut down and stop generating power in a more conventional warfare sense.

How do you know that’s not Russian propaganda? How are we supposed to know what is true. Would guess the media are in the dark as much as anyone. Probably only the security services know what’s actually happening on the ground.

Not really. All the interesting stuff is within thick concrete shielding, to stop it escaping. It would take a pretty sustained (and accurate) bombardment to crack that open. The big problem at Chernobyl was not so much that the containment failed, as the fire which put a huge cloud of radioactive smoke up into the atmosphere afterwards.

Agree but not shelling and also outside the perimeter. Original reports reported gunfire which that seems to be. Not sure even the Russians would be stupid enough to shell a nuclear facility,

Some people are desperate to minimise Russian actions, it seems. Just a firefight at a nuclear plant - no big deal.

Possibly star-shells for illumination. They usually have little parachutes, so could have drifted into the plant on the wind. Notably, they are burning brightly on the way down and there is no explosion on impact, which one would expect there to be if artillery. Certainly not normal shelling.

Yes I've been following his commentary on this, thankfully there are plenty of good experts out there who are providing valuable insight that is otherwise lacking from our media.

There is, however, the Robert Heinlein adage (actually a paraphrase): Never ascribe to malice what can better be explained by incompetence.

Not minimising at all I just try to find out the truth as Ukraine are desperate for NATO to get involved as are the media. A firefight at a powerplant is not good and I never said it was but the hysteria is that Europe is about to be destroyed from a blown up powerplant is not even close to the truth.

the worry is more that either:- the russians make a mistake or those on the ground get out of control or they get more desperate and the temptation to make this kind of statement increases

But even that's only machine-gun fire, which isn't going to damage a nuclear reactor.
