When managers or players talk about lower Lg 2 and non league teams as being 'good teams'. I like Aluko but in his interview he says of Southend 'But to be fair to them, they ran hard, they were a good team, they made a lot of changes but that disrupted the game.'

No Sone, they really aren't a good team - they are in the conference! OK, they ran hard or whatever, but we really shouldn't be describing teams like this as 'good'.

We've done it a lot over the last few years - kind of making excuses for defeats at the likes of Lincoln and Morecombe and Norwich, etc. It's a sad reflection of how far we've fallen and i look forward to the day when these minnows are treated with respect, but aren't described as 'good teams'.

Birthday rant over. Yes, it's my birthday, a milestone one, and I've got COVID and feeling miffed!

Happy birthday buh.

I also look forward to the day one of our players comes to a post match presser and describes the opposition as 'dog sh1t'. That would be refreshingly honest.

Happy Birthday. Hope you feel better soon.

Don't think this is an issue. It's not excusing failure, it's just basic respect. Prem managers would say the same about us when compared to them we are not a good team.

It's just meaningless football talk.

Truly impaired.

The best was Judge

Can't remember who the team was but they'd only won 2 home games and he went onto say how it was a difficult place to visit and a draw was a good result.

a niche perspective

I think you're reading into it a bit too much.

All teams will say it regardless of their position in the pyramid. You'd probably have Palace players saying similar if asked about us and their fans probably thinking the same as you.

Its just a generic response to be respectful. No player is going to come out and say they're a terrible team, I don't know why we bothered playing them.

Happy birthday, hope you get over the Covid swiftly.

I think in that context it means "not to be taken lightly". We all know that lower-tier sides are capable of taking down teams two or three divisions above in one-off games, even when they can't hope to consistently match them on league performance. They aren't of the same standard as Town, but neither are they that far below.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Happy birthday! I’ve just got over Covid - not nice, but things will improve, especially after a good win on Saturday.

I know what you mean about bigging up the opposition. I don’t think an opponent should be disrespected (no need to hand out ammunition), just not mentioned if there’s nothing to say or they’re garbage. And let’s face it, a lot of teams in L1 are garbage so Southend certainly are.

It’s actually something that used to irritate with McCarthy. To hear him at times it’d feel we were playing Brazil 1970 when it was a 1-10-0 formation for a prized point at home against Rotherham.

Just say - 'Yeah, I thought they did really well for a team in the conference; caused us a lot of problems with their running, but you know, no disrespect to them, but we really should be beating teams like this'

Like Churchy says - Mick Mac was one of the worst at this. i'm sure it;s about being polite and mitigating a poor performance or whatever. But we're not mugs, we know a lot of those little teams aren't very good.

And another things while i'm at it - the fact that we are playing the likes of Millwall, or yes, even West ham, in pre season and are seen as the lesser team is a blot on our proud heritage.

I really, really hope we've turned the corner and get back soon to where we should be - East Anglia's top team.
