Here in Andalucia we're constantly in a drought, zero rain since April and the reservoir that provides all our water is at just 13% capacity. My house is surrounded by Mango and Avocado plantations, 2 of the worse water consuming fruit to grow in the world!
Because the farmers have all the power here and the local government are all corrupt, for the the last 2 months our water supply is cut off on Saturday mornings and not turned back on again until Wednesday, just so the farmers can water their plants!
We then have to survive on a 1500 Litre tank in our garden for all our needs when the water is off. |  | | |

Don't Anglian Water get a lot of their water from aquifers which are underground and thus the local water network is more resilient to conditions like this?

East Anglia is fairly dry most of the time, it's definitely the driest part of the UK, was labelled semi arid once by climate scientists and I think does often meet some of the climate criteria for being called a desert most years, (to do with evaporation exceeding rainfall I think)
So Anglian Water pretty much have to work under planning drought conditions all the time, you can read the drought plan on their website, which goes into more detail. But they've said we are at 80% reservoir levels which are currently stable, hosepipe bans come in when water supply is seriously at risk, which at the moment they aren't...yet.

The reason for bans isn't to stop people watering plants, at least not foodstuff, it's to stop people filling paddling pools and being wasteful.
If people could be trusted to not take the pee then we'd probably be ok. But that's not going to happen is it.
I had a dream last night that I was in a large swimming pool but it had fish in it that were a bit bitey.

I fully agree we should all be sensible with its use but when we learn how much clean water is wasted by leaks it feels a bit insulting to have the blame for shortages aimed at the public.
And for the billionth time for an island why have we not invested over the years on desalinisation? Yes costs etc, but for long term gains surely that's the answer. | |
